pune is a pub city. i’ll say that confidently.

mumbai has the expensive bars. bangalore has the microbreweries. but pune? pune has this sweet spot where you get good craft beer, decent live music, and reasonable prices in the same place. the pub culture here is relaxed, unpretentious, and genuinely fun.

i spend at least one evening a week at a pub. sometimes it’s planned, sometimes it’s a “one beer” that turns into four. the pubs on this list know me. my wallet has opinions about that.

the top tier

1. effingut

baner / rs 1400 for two / 9/10

pune’s original craft brewery. the one that started it all. effingut was brewing craft beer when most of pune was still drinking kingfisher. and they’re still the best at it.

the hefeweizen is smooth, wheaty, with banana and clove notes. it’s my default order. the stout is rich and roasty, perfect in pune’s brief winter. the seasonal specials are where the brewmaster experiments, and the experiments usually work.

the space is cozy. the brewing equipment is visible behind glass. the food is better than any brewery needs to be. the pulled pork sliders are genuinely excellent. the staff knows their beers and can guide you through a tasting.

i come here at least twice a month. my loyalty is earned, not given.

what to order: hefeweizen, seasonal special, pulled pork sliders, beer-battered fish and chips verdict: best craft beer in pune. the OG brewery that still brews the best. non-negotiable.

2. high spirits

koregaon park / rs 1600 for two / 9/10

if effingut is the beer pub, high spirits is the music pub. live bands 5-6 nights a week. local acts, touring bands, open mic nights, jazz nights. the sound system is professional grade. the stage is proper.

the space is a large open-air venue in the heart of koregaon park. it fills up fast on weekends. like, standing-room-only packed. the energy on a good friday night is electric.

the drinks are standard. you’re not coming here for cocktail innovation. you’re coming for the music. the cover charge on big nights is rs 500-1000 but usually includes a drink.

the best nights are mid-week when the crowd is smaller and the music is more intimate. thursday jazz night is my favorite.

what to order: beer, rum and coke, keep it simple. the music is the main course. verdict: best live music pub in pune. the music is the product, everything else is bonus.

3. toit

baner / rs 1400 for two / 8.5/10

the bangalore brewery that conquered pune. toit is the all-rounder. good beer, good food, big space, group-friendly. it does everything well without being the best at any one thing.

the toit blonde is their bestseller. the belgian wit is refreshing. the food menu is extensive and actually good. the pizzas compete with pizza restaurants. the wings are properly done. the burger is solid.

the space is massive. you can get a table for 8-10 without booking on most weekdays. the beer tower is the group move. 3 liters for the table, shared, communal, fun.

what to order: toit blonde, belgian wit, margherita pizza, peri peri wings, beer tower for groups verdict: best all-round pub in pune. good at everything, great for groups.

4. great state aleworks

baner / rs 1400 for two / 8.5/10

the indie brewery. great state is smaller than effingut or toit but the beer is on par. the brewer here has a background in chemistry and it shows. the IPAs are hoppy without being bitter bombs. the wheat beer is clean and balanced.

the space is industrial-chic. exposed brick, metal fixtures, brewing equipment as decor. the food is limited but focused. the beer cheese fries are the standout.

less crowded than the big names. more intimate. the conversations with the brewery staff about the beer are genuinely interesting.

what to order: session IPA, wheat beer, beer cheese fries verdict: best independent brewery in pune. for beer nerds who want to go deeper.

5. doolally

koregaon park / rs 1200 for two / 8/10

the experimenter. doolally brews things that other breweries won’t try. mango wheat beer, kokum sour, coffee stout. not everything works but the ambition is refreshing.

the koregaon park location has a nice outdoor area. the food is tapas-style. the crowd is a mix of expats and locals. the vibe is relaxed, curious, open to trying weird beer.

the apple cider is their best non-beer product. legitimately good.

what to order: seasonal special (always try it), apple cider, loaded nachos verdict: most experimental brewery in pune. for adventurous beer drinkers.

6. swig

koregaon park / rs 1200 for two / 8/10

no-pretense pub. good beer at fair prices. the pitchers are well-priced. the burgers are solid. the crowd is casual. it’s the pub you go to when you want a drink and zero pressure.

no live music. no gimmicks. just a well-run pub with reasonable prices in koregaon park, where everything is usually overpriced.

what to order: beer pitcher, smash burger, loaded fries verdict: best value pub in koregaon park. no-nonsense drinking.

7. the urban foundry

baner / rs 1600 for two / 8/10

the rooftop pub. industrial decor, craft cocktails (yes, a pub with good cocktails), and that rooftop view. baner needed something with elevation and the urban foundry delivers.

the beer selection is curated, not brewed in-house. the food is modern pub food, well-executed. winter evenings on the rooftop are special.

what to order: craft beer, old fashioned, truffle fries verdict: best rooftop pub in pune. elevated drinking in every sense.

8. independence

mundhwa / rs 800 for two / 8/10

the budget pub. beer from rs 100. pitchers for nothing. massive space. outdoor area. it’s not sophisticated but when you want to drink without your wallet crying, independence is the answer.

the crowd is young, loud, and having fun. the food is bar-standard. the drinks are strong. the value is insane.

what to order: beer pitchers, vodka soda, chicken tikka verdict: cheapest pub in pune. quality won’t win awards but your wallet will thank you.

9. 1st brewhouse

aundh / rs 1400 for two / 7.5/10

aundh’s brewery. good beer, nice space, decent food. the wheat beer is their best. not as refined as effingut or great state but solid for the area.

verdict: best pub in aundh. limited competition but it holds up.

10. hoppipola

koregaon park / rs 1200 for two / 7.5/10

party pub. board games on the tables, shots being passed around, groups celebrating birthdays. it’s loud, chaotic, and fun in a “we’re all in our 20s” kind of way.

the drinks are decent. the food is average. the vibe carries it.

verdict: best party pub for young crowds. come to party, not to appreciate beer.

11. agent jack’s

koregaon park / rs 1200 for two / 7.5/10

happy hour specialist. the deals are genuinely good. thursday ladies night is packed. it’s a pub that knows its audience: young people who want cheap drinks and loud music.

verdict: best happy hour pub. come during deals, skip the full-price nights.

12. bluebar

koregaon park / rs 1400 for two / 7/10

stays open later than most. the last-resort pub when everything else is closing. the drinks are standard. the crowd gets messy after midnight.

verdict: the after-hours option. when you’re not ready to stop.

13. hard rock cafe

koregaon park / rs 2000 for two / 7/10

it’s the same hard rock everywhere. overpriced, loud, rock memorabilia, burgers. tourists and out-of-towners come here. locals go to effingut.

verdict: tourist pub. overpriced for what it is.

14. lolita’s

koregaon park / rs 1200 for two / 7/10

used to be better. the quality has dipped. the drinks are standard, the food has declined, and the vibe is trying too hard. two years ago this was an 8/10.

verdict: declining. used to be good, now just average.

15. the irish village

koregaon park / rs 1400 for two / 7/10

irish-themed pub. guinness on tap (when available). the interiors are authentically pub-like. dark wood, low light, dart boards. the food is irish pub food: shepherd’s pie, fish and chips.

decent for the theme, not outstanding for the beer or food.

verdict: best themed pub. come for the irish experience.

16. pair a dice

viman nagar / rs 1000 for two / 6.5/10

board game pub. fun concept, average execution. the games are the draw, not the drinks or food.

verdict: play games at home with better drinks.

17. the byte

hinjewadi / rs 1000 for two / 6.5/10

hinjewadi’s pub for the IT crowd. it exists because there’s nothing else in hinjewadi. the bar is low and the byte clears it. barely.

verdict: hinjewadi’s only real option. that’s not a compliment.

18. cafe 1730

koregaon park / rs 1400 for two / 6.5/10

can’t decide if it’s a cafe, a pub, or a restaurant. does all three poorly. the identity crisis is the whole experience.

verdict: identity crisis in liquid form. skip.
