tldr: out of 18 bars, my top 3 are the permit room (best cocktails, koregaon park), effingut (best craft beer, baner), and high spirits (best live music, koregaon park). average spend per night: rs 1,500-2,500 for two. full reviews with drink prices, music, and vibe below.

pune’s bar scene has changed dramatically in the last few years.

five years ago, your options were basically high spirits or a shady permit room (not the good kind). now there are genuinely excellent cocktail bars, craft breweries, wine bars, and everything in between. the quality has caught up with mumbai. the prices haven’t. that’s pune’s sweet spot.

i drink at these places regularly. some weekly, some monthly, some only when friends drag me. i’ve had enough bad cocktails and overpriced beer in this city to know what’s worth your money.

here’s my honest ranking. no one paid me, no one gave me free drinks. i wish they had.

the top tier (my regulars)

1. the permit room

koregaon park / rs 1800 for two / 9/10

the best bar in pune. i’ll fight anyone on this.

the cocktail menu is genuinely creative. not “creative” as in weird combinations nobody wants. creative as in indian ingredients used thoughtfully. the aam panna sour, the kokum margarita, the masala old fashioned. every cocktail has a concept that works.

the bar food is excellent too. the staff actually knows their drinks. you can describe what you like and they’ll make something off-menu that hits. that’s rare in pune.

the space is beautiful. art deco meets indian aesthetic. dim lighting, good music, comfortable seating. it works for dates, groups, and solo drinking (i’ve done all three).

my tab here usually runs rs 2000-2500 for two with food and 3-4 cocktails. worth every rupee.

what to order: kokum margarita, aam panna sour, chicken ghee roast verdict: best bar in pune. best cocktails in pune. if you only go to one bar, make it this one.

2. effingut

baner / rs 1400 for two / 9/10

pune’s original craft brewery. they were doing craft beer before it was a trend. before toit, before doolally, there was effingut. and they’re still the best at it.

the hefeweizen is my go-to. smooth, wheaty, perfect. the stout is excellent in winter. they rotate seasonal brews that are always interesting. the brewmaster actually experiments and it shows.

the food menu is better than most breweries. the pulled pork sliders are addictive. the space is cozy and warm, with the brewing equipment visible behind glass.

if you care about craft beer, effingut is non-negotiable.

3. high spirits

koregaon park / rs 1600 for two / 8.5/10

pune’s live music institution. if you want live music on any night of the week, high spirits has you covered. local bands, touring acts, open mic nights. the sound system is professional grade.

the bar itself is a large open-air venue. the drinks are standard, prices are moderate. you’re paying for the music as much as the drinks.

friday and saturday nights get packed. like, can’t-move-packed. go on a wednesday or thursday for better vibes with less chaos.

what to order: whatever’s on tap, rum and coke (keep it simple here) verdict: best live music bar in pune. the music is the product. the drinks are the bonus.

4. botequim

koregaon park / rs 2000 for two / 8.5/10

brazilian-inspired bar. small, intimate, beautifully done. the cocktails are excellent. the caipirinhas are authentic. the food is tapas-style.

this is where you bring a date when you want to impress. not a group hangout. not a party spot. a proper, intimate bar where conversations happen.

the bartenders are skilled. the playlist is perfect. everything about this place says “someone cared about every detail.”

what to order: classic caipirinha, passion fruit mojito, peri peri prawns verdict: best date bar in pune. intimate, classy, no college crowd.

5. elephant & co

camp / rs 1600 for two / 8.5/10

the interiors here are stunning. colonial-era aesthetic with elephant motifs, wooden floors, brass fixtures. it feels like drinking in a british officer’s club from 1920.

the drinks are solid. good whisky selection, decent cocktails. the food is better than most bars. the camp location gives it an old-pune charm that koregaon park bars can’t replicate.

what to order: whisky (they have a great selection), mutton pepper fry verdict: best ambiance bar in pune. come for the aesthetics, stay for the whisky.

6. the daily all day

koregaon park / rs 2000 for two / 8/10

wine bar meets all-day cafe. the wine selection is the best in pune. they do wine flights which is great for exploring. the food is excellent, especially the weekend brunch.

more upscale than most pune bars. the crowd is older, more sophisticated. no screaming college kids.

what to order: wine flight, cheese board, mushroom risotto verdict: best wine bar in pune. come when you want something grown-up.

7. toit

baner / rs 1400 for two / 8/10

the bangalore brewery comes to pune. good craft beer selection, massive space, food menu that actually competes with restaurants. great for groups.

the toit blonde is their bestseller and it’s solid. the pizzas are better than they need to be for a brewery. weekend brunch here is popular.

8. swig

koregaon park / rs 1200 for two / 8/10

casual, no-pretense bar. the drinks are reasonably priced by kp standards. the vibe is relaxed. good for a casual tuesday night drink when you don’t want to get dressed up.

the burger and beer combo is my go-to here. rs 600 for a good burger and a pint. that’s fair.

what to order: beer, smash burger, loaded fries verdict: best casual bar in koregaon park. no pretense, just drinks.

9. independence

mundhwa / rs 800 for two / 8/10

the budget king. drinks start at rs 150. pitchers are dirt cheap. the place is massive with outdoor seating. it’s not fancy but the prices are impossible to beat.

the crowd is young. the music is loud. the drinks are strong. if you’re on a budget, this is where you go.

what to order: beer pitchers, vodka lime soda (rs 150) verdict: cheapest drinks in pune. quality? decent. price? unbeatable.

10. agent jack’s

koregaon park / rs 1200 for two / 7.5/10

party bar. loud music, cheap shots during happy hour, young crowd. it’s not sophisticated. it’s not trying to be. it’s a party.

thursday ladies night is when it peaks. go if you want to dance and drink cheap. don’t go if you want conversation.

11. 1st brewhouse

aundh / rs 1400 for two / 7.5/10

craft brewery in aundh. good beer, decent food, nice space. not as good as effingut but a solid option if you’re in the area.

verdict: aundh’s best brewery. worth visiting if you’re nearby.

12. load

koregaon park / rs 1800 for two / 7.5/10

newer cocktail bar with a creative menu. some drinks work, some don’t. still finding its identity. the space is nice and the bartenders are enthusiastic.

verdict: promising cocktail bar. give it a year.

13. the urban foundry

baner / rs 1600 for two / 7.5/10

modern bar with industrial decor. good food, decent drinks. the rooftop seating is the highlight. baner needed a bar like this.

verdict: best rooftop bar in baner. good on winter evenings.

14. bluebar

koregaon park / rs 1400 for two / 7/10

late-night option. stays open later than most. the crowd gets messy after midnight. drinks are standard. nothing special, nothing offensive.

verdict: when everything else is closing and you’re not ready to stop.

15. hard rock cafe

koregaon park / rs 2000 for two / 7/10

it’s hard rock cafe. you know what you’re getting. burgers, loud music, overpriced drinks, rock memorabilia. the same in every city in the world. fine if you want familiarity.

verdict: a tourist bar in a local city. skip if you live here.

16. mi a mi

koregaon park / rs 1800 for two / 7/10

mediterranean-themed bar. decent cocktails, okay food. tries to be upscale but doesn’t quite get there. the hummus is good though.

verdict: average bar with a theme. nothing memorable.

17. lolita’s cafe

koregaon park / rs 1200 for two / 6.5/10

was better two years ago. the quality has dipped. the drinks are standard, the food is mid. resting on reputation.

verdict: skip. it’s not what it used to be.

18. comedy club

baner / rs 1000 for two / 6.5/10

bar + comedy shows. the comedy varies wildly. some nights are hilarious, some nights are painful. the drinks are okay. come for the comedy, lower your expectations.

verdict: hit or miss comedy, average drinks. a fun gamble.

• best night to go out: thursday and saturday. friday is overrated and overcrowded.
• best area: koregaon park has the highest density of good bars. baner is catching up.
• budget hack: pre-game at independence (rs 150 drinks), then move to koregaon park.
• dress code: most bars don’t care. no shorts at some premium places. shoes over chappals at the fancier spots.
• uber availability: decent until 12:30am. after that, good luck.
• closing time: most bars close by 1:30am. don’t expect mumbai hours.
