tldr: my top 5 from 15 spots - blue nile (camp, best overall, mutton at rs 350), hyderabad biryani house (camp, best hyderabadi, rs 300), MD’s biryani (NIBM, best budget, rs 180 chicken), persian darbar (multiple, most consistent), and biryani by kilo (kothrud/baner, best premium, rs 450 mutton). full reviews with prices, styles, and the pune vs hyderabad biryani debate below.

i haven’t visited all 15 of these spots personally. i’ve eaten biryani in pune on multiple visits but this guide combines personal experience with extensive research - local food blogs, google reviews, youtube food tours, and recommendations from pune locals.

pune has a complicated relationship with biryani. this is a city whose food identity is misal pav, vada pav, and the legendary bakeries. biryani was an outsider. the marathas didn’t traditionally do biryani. the city’s food culture was (and still is) vegetarian-leaning by maharashtrian standards.

but then the IT boom happened. the student population exploded. hyderabadis, north indians, and food delivery apps arrived simultaneously. biryani went from “that non-veg thing” to “the most ordered food on swiggy in pune.” the transformation has been dramatic and fast.

the result is a biryani scene that borrows from everywhere. hyderabadi-style dum biryani dominates. lucknowi influences appear. there’s even a nascent “puneri biryani” style that’s lighter, less spicy, and more aromatic. and the competition keeps quality high because pune’s food-savvy population doesn’t tolerate mediocrity.

here are the 15 best biryani spots in pune, with honest reviews and prices.

the awards (my picks)

the legends

these restaurants have been doing biryani in pune for decades. they predate the biryani boom, predate swiggy and zomato, and have earned their reputation through consistency and quality.

1. blue nile

camp, east street / chicken: rs 280, mutton: rs 350 / 9/10

blue nile is pune’s biryani monument. located on east street in camp, this restaurant has been serving biryani since the 1970s and it’s what every biryani in pune is measured against. the style is mughlai with a puneri refinement - the rice is long-grain basmati, perfectly separated, and the spicing favors aroma over heat. cardamom, saffron, and rose water are prominent. the masala doesn’t punch you. it seduces you.

the mutton biryani is the star. rs 350 for mutton pieces that are bone-in, slow-cooked, and tender enough to fall apart when you press with a spoon. the rice-to-meat ratio is generous. the gravy at the bottom of the serving is rich and concentrated. pair it with raita and a mirchi salan, and this is as good as biryani gets in pune.

the chicken biryani at rs 280 is also excellent. lighter than the mutton version, with properly marinated chicken that’s juicy and well-spiced. the restaurant itself is clean, well-maintained, and has a proper dining area. the camp location means it’s accessible from most parts of pune.

blue nile also does excellent kebabs, rolls, and mughlai curries. the seekh kebab and the chicken tikka are reliable starters while you wait for the biryani.

the catch: the fame means it gets crowded, especially on weekends. the prices have gone up over the years. the parking in camp area is a nightmare. some regulars say the quality has dipped slightly compared to peak years, though i haven’t noticed it on my visits.

verdict: the best biryani in pune, period. the mutton biryani is the reason to come, and it delivers every time. this is where pune’s biryani story begins. if you eat biryani at only one place in pune, eat here.

2. hyderabad biryani house

camp / chicken: rs 250, mutton: rs 300 / 8.5/10

hyderabad biryani house in camp does what the name promises: hyderabadi-style dum biryani in a city that’s mostly mughlai. the difference is immediately apparent. the rice has the characteristic yellow-white layering. the spice level is higher. the masala uses more red chilli and less saffron compared to blue nile. this is biryani that fights back.

the chicken dum biryani is their bestseller and it’s genuinely good. the dum cooking (sealed pot, slow heat) means the rice absorbs the meat juices and spices during cooking. the result is rice that’s flavorful on its own, not just a vehicle for the meat. the mutton version is rich and the bone marrow adds depth to the gravy.

the restaurant is no-frills. basic seating, functional decor, fast service. you come for the biryani, not the ambience. the location in camp puts it within walking distance of blue nile, which means you can try both in one trip and form your own opinion.

the catch: the hyderabadi purists will say it’s not as good as actual hyderabad biryani. they’re right, technically. but for pune, this is the closest you’ll get without driving to hyderabad. the spice level might be too much for those used to the gentler mughlai style. portions could be bigger for the price.

verdict: the best hyderabadi-style biryani in pune. if you prefer spicy, layered biryani over the subtle mughlai style, this is your spot. the chicken dum biryani is the move.

3. hotel shreyas

sadashiv peth / chicken: rs 200, mutton: rs 280 / 8/10

hotel shreyas represents something interesting in pune’s biryani scene: the puneri approach. the biryani here is lighter than both the mughlai and hyderabadi styles. less oil, less cream, less heat. the focus is on the rice quality and the aromatics. the rice is fragrant with whole spices, and the meat is cooked separately before being layered. the result is a cleaner, less heavy biryani that you can eat without needing a nap afterward.

this is the biryani that older pune residents prefer. the generation that grew up before the hyderabadi invasion. the sadashiv peth location is in old pune, and the clientele reflects that. the restaurant also does excellent maharashtrian food - the thali is worth trying on another visit.

the catch: if you’re used to rich, creamy, spicy biryani, hotel shreyas’ version might feel understated. the “puneri style” is an acquired taste. the restaurant is in old pune, which means narrow roads and parking challenges. the non-biryani menu items sometimes overshadow the biryani.

verdict: the most distinctly puneri biryani in pune. lighter, more aromatic, and gentler. worth trying as a contrast to the camp restaurants. this is what biryani looks like through a maharashtrian lens.

the camp circuit

camp (cantonment area) is pune’s biryani capital. the area around east street, MG road, and cafe goodluck has the highest concentration of biryani restaurants in the city. here are the other camp spots worth knowing.

4. lucky restaurant

camp / chicken: rs 250, mutton: rs 300 / 7.5/10

lucky restaurant in camp is another old-school biryani spot that’s been around for decades. the mughlai biryani here is reliable. not as refined as blue nile, not as aggressive as hyderabad biryani house, but consistently good. the chicken biryani has a nice balance of spice and aroma. the kebabs are a highlight - the seekh kebab and the boti kebab pair well with the biryani.

the restaurant has that old-camp character: slightly dated decor, no-nonsense service, and a menu that hasn’t changed much in years. the prices are fair for the area.

the catch: lives in blue nile’s shadow and it’s hard to argue otherwise. the biryani is good but not great. in a camp area with multiple options, lucky is the third choice, not the first. the interior could use renovation.

verdict: a reliable camp biryani option. not the best but consistently solid. the kebabs might be the better reason to visit.

5. cafe goodluck area stalls

camp / chicken: rs 150, mutton: rs 200 / 8/10

around the famous cafe goodluck (known for bun maska and chai), there are street-style biryani vendors who set up during lunch and dinner. these stalls serve basic, no-frills biryani at rs 150-200 per plate. the quality is surprisingly good. the biryani is street-style - spicier, more masaledar, less refined than the restaurants, but packed with flavor.

these stalls serve the working-class camp crowd: shop workers, auto drivers, and budget-conscious students. the biryani is made in large quantities which means the dum cooking happens at scale. the chicken pieces are small but the masala is excellent. pair with a cutting chai from a nearby stall and you have a complete meal for under rs 200.

the catch: street food hygiene applies. no seating at most stalls. the biryani quality varies between vendors and between days. no consistency guarantee. the stalls don’t have names or signage in most cases.

verdict: the best budget biryani in camp. the street-style spicing is different from restaurant biryani and worth experiencing. eat here when you want raw, honest biryani without the restaurant markup.

6. zam zam biryani

camp / chicken: rs 200, mutton: rs 280 / 7/10

zam zam in camp does mughlai biryani at mid-range prices. the biryani is decent - properly cooked rice, adequate spicing, reasonable meat portions. it’s the kind of biryani that doesn’t excite you but doesn’t disappoint you either. the rolls and kebabs are actually better than the biryani.

the catch: in a camp area with blue nile and hyderabad biryani house, zam zam finishes third or fourth. the biryani is fine but “fine” isn’t enough when excellence is a five-minute walk away.

verdict: acceptable camp biryani. a backup option when the better spots are full.

the new favorites

7. MD’s biryani

NIBM, kondhwa / chicken: rs 180, mutton: rs 250 / 8.5/10

MD’s biryani has become one of pune’s most talked-about biryani spots in the last few years. located in the student-heavy NIBM and kondhwa areas, MD’s serves hyderabadi-style biryani at prices that make students weep with joy. chicken biryani at rs 180 that’s properly made, with dum cooking, decent spicing, and honest portions. the mutton at rs 250 is also well-priced.

the handi biryani is the signature. the biryani arrives in an earthen pot, sealed, with the dum intact. opening it at the table releases an aroma cloud that’s marketing and culinary genius simultaneously. the rice is good, the masala is balanced, and the meat quality is above what you’d expect at this price point.

MD’s has expanded to multiple outlets. the NIBM and kondhwa outlets are the most popular and the most consistent. the google ratings (4.2-4.4 across outlets) are strong for the price bracket.

the catch: the quality can vary between outlets and between days. the newer outlets are inconsistent. the earthen pot is a nice touch but doesn’t fundamentally change the biryani. at peak hours, the wait can be 30+ minutes because they cook in batches.

verdict: the best value biryani in pune. rs 180 for chicken biryani that’s actually good is hard to beat. the handi presentation adds to the experience. essential for budget biryani seekers.

8. persian darbar

multiple outlets / chicken: rs 300, mutton: rs 380 / 8.5/10

persian darbar’s pune outlets maintain the chain’s reputation for consistent mughlai-hyderabadi biryani. the chicken biryani uses the dum method with proper layering. the mutton biryani is rich with well-cooked meat. the chain’s standardization means you know exactly what you’ll get whether you’re at the baner, koregaon park, or kothrud outlet.

the kebabs and the butter chicken are worth ordering alongside. the restaurants are clean, family-friendly, and have proper seating. for a mid-range biryani dinner for two at rs 600-800, persian darbar is hard to fault.

the catch: chain restaurant with no surprises. the biryani is good but never special. you won’t have a “this changes everything” moment here. the prices have crept up and at rs 300 for chicken biryani, it’s no longer the value option.

verdict: the most reliable biryani chain in pune. order when you want good biryani without thinking. the consistency is the selling point.

9. biryani by kilo

kothrud, baner / chicken: rs 350, mutton: rs 450 / 8/10

the premium option. biryani by kilo cooks each order fresh in an individual handi. the 30-45 minute wait is the trade-off for biryani that arrives hot, fresh, and with intact layers. the hyderabadi-style mutton handi is excellent. the lucknowi option is lighter and works for those who want less heat.

the presentation is the best of any biryani spot in pune. the sealed handi, the fresh cooking, and the “by kilo” portioning make it feel special. it’s the biryani you order for celebrations or when you want to treat yourself.

the catch: the price. rs 450 for mutton biryani is steep by pune standards when MD’s does it at rs 250 and blue nile at rs 350. the wait time is real - this is not spontaneous food. the cloud kitchen format means the hygiene is less visible.

verdict: the best premium biryani in pune. the individual handi cooking makes a genuine difference. plan ahead and enjoy.

10. biryani blues

baner, viman nagar / chicken: rs 250, mutton: rs 320 / 8/10

biryani blues brings chain-quality hyderabadi dum biryani to pune’s IT corridors. the baner and viman nagar outlets cater to the tech crowd who want proper biryani near their offices. the chicken biryani is spicy and well-layered. the starters (kebab platters, chicken wings) are good accompaniments.

the restaurants are clean, consistent, and deliver well. for the baner/viman nagar tech worker ordering biryani for a team lunch, biryani blues is the reliable choice.

the catch: chain energy. no soul, no local character. the same biryani you’d get at biryani blues in any other city. in pune, where blue nile exists, paying rs 250 for chain biryani feels unnecessary.

verdict: the best hyderabadi chain biryani in pune’s IT areas. reliable for everyday ordering. not worth a special trip.

budget & suburban options

11. kolkata biryani house

kothrud / chicken: rs 150, mutton: rs 200 / 7.5/10

kolkata biryani house in kothrud brings kolkata-style biryani to pune. the signature potato, the lighter spicing, and the fragrant rice are all present. chicken biryani at rs 150 is one of the cheapest decent biryanis in pune. the target audience is students and budget-conscious families.

the kolkata style works differently in pune. the lighter flavoring stands out in a city where everyone else is doing spicy hyderabadi. some people appreciate the subtlety. others find it bland. the potato is the litmus test - love it or hate it.

the catch: the kolkata style doesn’t resonate with pune’s palate the way hyderabadi does. the portions are adequate but not generous. the restaurant is basic. the flavor profile can feel like “less” rather than “different.”

verdict: the best budget biryani in kothrud. an interesting alternative style at an unbeatable price. try it once.

12. seekh & biryani

kalyani nagar / chicken: rs 250, mutton: rs 350 / 7.5/10

seekh & biryani does hyderabadi-style biryani paired with a seekh kebab menu in kalyani nagar. the biryani is competent and the seekh kebabs are the actual highlight. the combination platter (biryani + seekh kebab) is good value and covers both bases.

the catch: the biryani alone doesn’t justify a trip. the seekh kebabs elevate the experience. average without them.

verdict: best biryani-plus-kebab combination in east pune. come for the seekh, stay for the biryani.

13. arsalan

koregaon park / chicken: rs 280, mutton: rs 350 / 7.5/10

arsalan brings kolkata biryani tradition to koregaon park’s cosmopolitan setting. the biryani is authentic kolkata-style with the potato and the light fragrance. the mughlai menu beyond biryani is also solid. the koregaon park location attracts the expat and professional crowd.

the catch: the kolkata style is niche in pune. the prices are higher than kolkata biryani house for a similar style. the ambience is nice but you’re paying the koregaon park premium.

verdict: kolkata biryani in a nicer setting. worth it if you’re in koregaon park and craving the subtler style.

14. bikkgane biryani

baner, kothrud / chicken: rs 250, mutton: rs 320 / 7/10

bikkgane is another hyderabadi chain that’s entered pune. the biryani is standard chain-quality - consistent, properly spiced, and reliably packaged for delivery. nothing exceptional but nothing disappointing either.

the catch: in a pune with biryani blues, persian darbar, and MD’s, bikkgane struggles to differentiate. the brand positioning is muddled. the biryani is fine but unnecessary.

verdict: acceptable chain biryani. order when your preferred options are unavailable or have long delivery times.

15. behrouz biryani

delivery only / chicken: rs 300, mutton: rs 380 / 7/10

behrouz’s pune cloud kitchen operations deliver competent biryani in premium packaging. the biryani is consistent across orders. the gulab jamun add-on is nice. but at rs 300 for chicken biryani from a cloud kitchen, the value proposition is weak when MD’s does it at rs 180 and blue nile at rs 280.

the catch: cloud kitchen premiums for biryani that’s good but not great. the branding outpaces the food.

verdict: the convenience option. order when you want biryani delivered without thinking. don’t order when you want great biryani - go to blue nile or MD’s instead.

pune’s biryani identity

pune is still figuring out its biryani identity. unlike hyderabad or lucknow, which have centuries of biryani tradition, pune’s biryani scene is relatively young. but that youth is also an advantage - the city isn’t bound by tradition and can borrow freely.

the hyderabadi dominance: most biryani restaurants in pune, from chains to standalone shops, serve hyderabadi-style. the spicy, layered, dum-cooked biryani resonates with pune’s young population. this is the dominant style and it’s not changing anytime soon.

the mughlai old guard: blue nile and the camp restaurants represent an older biryani tradition - mughlai-style, less spicy, more aromatic. this is the pune biryani that existed before the hyderabadi wave. it’s more refined but has a smaller (and older) fanbase.

the puneri experiment: hotel shreyas and a few other restaurants are doing what i’d call “puneri biryani” - lighter, less oily, more aromatic, influenced by maharashtrian sensibilities. it’s the most interesting development because it’s genuinely local. but it’s still a minority style.

the misal pav rivalry: pune’s food identity is misal pav, not biryani. ask a punekar what food represents pune and they’ll say misal, not biryani. but on delivery apps, biryani outsells misal by a wide margin. the identity and the reality are diverging. pune is becoming a biryani city whether it admits it or not.

tips for biryani in pune

camp is the pilgrimage: if you’re serious about biryani, start in camp. blue nile and hyderabad biryani house are within walking distance. eat at both, compare, and form your opinion. this is the essential pune biryani experience.

order mutton at old restaurants, chicken at new ones. the older restaurants (blue nile, lucky) have perfected mutton biryani over decades. the newer ones (MD’s, biryani blues) do better chicken biryani because that’s what the delivery audience orders.

lunch over dinner for the legends. blue nile and the camp restaurants prepare fresh batches for the lunch rush. the biryani at 12:30 pm is at its freshest.

handi biryani is worth the wait. if you order from biryani by kilo or MD’s handi, the 30-45 minute wait for fresh cooking genuinely improves the biryani. don’t rush it.

final word

pune’s biryani scene isn’t as deep as hyderabad’s or as historic as lucknow’s. but it’s vibrant, competitive, and rapidly improving. the combination of a young, diverse population and a food-savvy culture means bad biryani doesn’t survive long in pune.

start at blue nile in camp. that’s the foundation. then explore MD’s for budget, biryani by kilo for premium, and hyderabad biryani house for spice. and if you want to see where pune biryani might be heading, try hotel shreyas’ lighter puneri interpretation.

the city might not admit it yet, but pune is becoming one of india’s best biryani cities.
