tldr: out of 10 cafes, my top 3 on fc road are vaishali (since 1951, the legend), cafe kathaa (best for working, beautiful bungalow), and third wave coffee (best actual coffee). fc road is where pune’s cafe culture was born. here’s the complete guide.
fc road is where it all started.
before koregaon park got fancy, before baner got its breweries, fergusson college road was pune’s cafe street. and in many ways, it still is. the vibe here is different from kp. less instagram, more real. college students, professors, old couples, solo readers. fc road doesn’t try to impress you. it just exists, and you show up.
i live close enough that fc road is my default. need a coffee? fc road. need to work? fc road. need a cheap breakfast? fc road. some of these places i visit weekly.
this guide covers the cafes on and immediately around fc road. for the city-wide list, read my full pune cafes guide (29 cafes reviewed).
the awards (my personal picks)
- best overall: vaishali, the institution
- best for working: cafe kathaa, beautiful space + wifi
- best coffee: third wave coffee, specialty grade
- best budget: cafe goodluck, since 1935, rs 400 for two
- best late night: cafe mhuzo goa, open 24 hours
- best food: cafe goodluck, the kheema pav is elite

the legends
1. vaishali
fc road / rs 300 for two / 9/10
vaishali has been on fc road since 1951. seventy-plus years. it’s not a cafe. it’s a monument.
the paper masala dosa is crispy, golden, and perfectly filled. the filter coffee at rs 40 is better than anything you’ll get at a rs 300 specialty cafe. the misal pav is punchy and authentic. the crowd is a beautiful mix of everyone: students pulling all-nighters, professors arguing about politics, families on sunday outings, and old uncles who’ve been coming here since the 60s.
is the service slow? sometimes. is the seating comfortable? not really. does any of that matter? not even slightly. you come to vaishali for the food, the history, and the feeling of being part of something that’s bigger than any one visit.
i come here at least once a week. the staff knows my order.
what to order: paper masala dosa, filter coffee, misal pav, batata vada verdict: the best cafe on fc road. the best cafe in pune, arguably. an institution that still earns it.
2. cafe kathaa
fc road / rs 1000 for two / 8.5/10
an old bungalow converted into a cafe. the architecture alone is worth the visit. leafy surroundings, books everywhere, natural light pouring through windows. it’s pinterest-level beautiful.
the food is experimental in a good way. apple crumble pizza, falafel burgers, things you wouldn’t expect to work but do. the coffee is decent. the wifi is reliable. they open at 8am.
this is where i go when i need to work but also want to feel like i’m in a movie. the aesthetics-to-productivity ratio is perfect.
what to order: apple crumble pizza, cold brew, falafel burger verdict: most beautiful cafe on fc road. work-friendly, instagram-friendly, wallet less friendly.
3. third wave coffee
fc road / rs 500 for two / 8.5/10
if you actually care about coffee, not “cafe culture” but the actual bean, third wave is the spot. they do syphon brewing, chemex, french press, aeropress, pour-over. single origin beans from across india.
a pour-over costs around rs 180. expensive for fc road where you can get filter coffee for rs 40 at vaishali. but the quality difference is real. this is coffee treated as a craft.
the space is minimal. clean lines, no clutter. work-friendly with wifi.
what to order: pour-over (ask the barista for their recommendation), cold brew verdict: best coffee on fc road. for people who know their arabica from their robusta.
4. cafe goodluck
fc road / rs 400 for two / 8.5/10
since 1935. ninety years. goodluck is the other fc road institution. where vaishali is south indian breakfast, goodluck is irani cafe. bun maska, kheema pav, irani chai.
the kheema pav is the star. minced mutton, perfectly spiced, served with soft pav. the caramel custard is old-school perfection. the marble tables have seen more conversations than therapy offices.
no wifi. no pretense. eat, drink chai, leave. that’s the goodluck contract.
what to order: kheema pav, bun maska, irani chai, caramel custard verdict: fc road’s other institution. the kheema pav is worth any wait.
the working options
5. cafe mhuzo goa
fc road / rs 400 for two / 7.5/10
open 24 hours. twenty. four. hours. goan-themed with swings, bean bags, bunk beds, guitars hanging from walls. it’s quirky, it’s loud, it’s chaotic. and it’s always open.
the food is average. the drinks are average. but at 3am when you need to work or just need to be somewhere that isn’t your room, mhuzo goa is there for you. it’s the friend that never sleeps.
what to order: maggi, cold coffee (keep it simple at 3am) verdict: best 24-hour cafe on fc road. essential for students and insomniacs.
6. the coffee bean & tea leaf
fc road / rs 500 for two / 7/10
chain cafe. reliable. the coffee is consistent. the seating is comfortable. the wifi works. it’s not exciting but it’s predictable, and sometimes that’s what you want.
verdict: safe option for working. no surprises, no disappointments.
7. starbucks fc road
fc road / rs 600 for two / 6.5/10
it’s starbucks. you know what it is. the only reason to come here is if every other place is full, which on fc road is surprisingly common on weekends.
verdict: the backup plan. overpriced for what it is.
the food-first spots
8. rupali restaurant
fc road / rs 350 for two / 7.5/10
rupali is fc road’s budget all-rounder. chinese, south indian, snacks. the manchurian is surprisingly good. the dosa is solid. it’s not trying to be fancy and that’s its charm.
college students live here. the prices make it possible.
what to order: veg manchurian, masala dosa, cold coffee verdict: best budget all-rounder on fc road. students’ second home.
9. blue nile
fc road / rs 600 for two / 7.5/10
primarily a restaurant, not a cafe. but the biryani is too good to exclude. fc road’s biryani king. i’ve written about this in detail in my biryani guide.
what to order: mutton biryani, chicken afghani verdict: fc road’s biryani spot. come for lunch, not for coffee.
10. wadeshwar
fc road / rs 350 for two / 7/10
south indian food. similar to vaishali but slightly cheaper. the idli-sambar is good. the dosa is decent. but if vaishali is available, there’s no reason to come here instead. it’s the second choice.
what to order: idli sambar, masala dosa verdict: vaishali’s understudy. fine when vaishali has a long wait.
the fc road experience
here’s how i’d do fc road if you have a few hours:
- breakfast at goodluck (9am) - bun maska + chai
- walk to vaishali (10am) - dosa + filter coffee
- browse book stalls along fc road (10:30am)
- work at cafe kathaa (11am-1pm) - cold brew + wifi
- lunch biryani at blue nile (1pm) - mutton biryani
- coffee at third wave (3pm) - pour-over
total: around rs 1,200. total time: 6 hours. total satisfaction: immeasurable.
