tldr: top picks from 25 restaurants - agashiye (best gujarati thali, rs 2500 for two), vishala (best cultural dining experience), swati snacks (best street food restaurant, rs 500 for two), and bhatiyar gali (best non-veg street, rs 400 for two). this is a research-backed guide with some personal visits mixed in. full reviews with prices and honest opinions below.
let me be upfront about something. i haven’t eaten at all 25 of these places personally. some i have, some are based on deep research, local recommendations from friends who’ve lived in ahmedabad their whole lives, and cross-referencing reviews across zomato, google, and reddit threads.
i’m not going to pretend i flew to ahmedabad 25 times. that’s not how i do things. but i’ve visited the city multiple times, eaten at several of these spots, and spent an unreasonable amount of time researching the rest so you don’t have to scroll through 47 quora answers and justdial listings.
here’s the thing about ahmedabad food - it’s a predominantly vegetarian city. like, aggressively vegetarian. you’ll find more variety in gujarati snacks here than non-veg options in most other cities. that’s not a limitation, that’s the whole point. the vegetarian food here is on another level.
but non-veg exists too. you just need to know where to look (hint: bhatiyar gali).
i’ve categorised everything by type. ratings are out of 10. prices are approximate for two people. no one paid me for this. let’s go.
the awards (my picks)
- best overall: agashiye, lal darwaja - heritage gujarati thali that changes daily

gujarati thali restaurants
this is what ahmedabad does better than anywhere else in india. the gujarati thali is not just a meal, it’s an event. 20+ items on a plate, unlimited refills, sweet-sour-spicy all at once. if you’re visiting ahmedabad and you don’t eat a gujarati thali, did you even go?
1. agashiye (the house of mg)
lal darwaja / rs 2500 for two / 9.5/10

this is the one everyone talks about and for once, the hype is deserved. agashiye sits on the terrace of house of mg, a restored 1920s heritage haveli near sidi saiyyed mosque. the concept is simple but brilliant - a fixed menu that changes daily based on what’s seasonal.
you get two options: heritage grand (silver thali) and heritage classic (kansa thali). every dish feels home-cooked, which is the highest compliment for gujarati food. the dal, the kadhi, the seasonal undhiyu - all of it hits different when you’re eating under the open sky in a 100-year-old building.
fair warning: the bill will be higher than the listed price because of taxes and a compulsory donation they add. some people find this annoying. i think the experience is worth it, but you should know upfront.
verdict: best gujarati thali in ahmedabad. expensive, yes. but if you’re eating one thali in your life, make it this one.
2. vishala
vasna / rs 1600 for two / 9/10

vishala isn’t a restaurant. it’s an experience. set up like a gujarati village with mud walls, oil lamps, swings, and open-air seating. there’s a utensil museum next door. they do puppet shows and folk music performances while you eat. no electricity was used in the original concept - everything was biodegradable.
founded in 1978, the thali is served on leaf plates. you sit on the floor (or low chairs). the food is wholesome - kadhi, undhiyu, rotla, bajra rotla, and a spread of seasonal dishes.
now here’s where i’ll be honest - reviews are mixed on the food quality itself. some people say it’s the best meal they’ve had in gujarat, others say the food is average and you’re paying for the ambience. my take: go for the experience at least once. it’s genuinely unique. whether the food alone is worth rs 1600 for two depends on your expectations.
verdict: best restaurant experience in ahmedabad. the food is good, the ambience is unmatched. go at least once. take your parents, they’ll love it.
3. gordhan thal
bodakdev / rs 800 for two / 8.5/10

this is where amdavadis actually go for thali. not tourists, not instagrammers - regular people who want a solid unlimited gujarati thali at a price that doesn’t make them wince.
located opposite rajpath club in bodakdev, gordhan thal serves an all-you-can-eat thali with 4 sabzis, dal, kadhi, khichdi, rotis, puris, farsan, and the basundi is genuinely good. the place is clean, staff is prompt (and loud), and the food has authentic home-style taste.
get there early. peak hours mean 20-30 minute waits and parking is a nightmare. but for rs 400 per person for unlimited food of this quality? that’s a steal.
verdict: best value-for-money gujarati thali in ahmedabad. no frills, just solid food. your stomach and wallet both leave happy.
4. pakwan dining hall
bodakdev (sg highway) / rs 750 for two / 7.5/10

the og. pakwan is literally the restaurant that invented the concept of “gujarati thali” in ahmedabad. it’s so famous that the crossroad where it sits is called pakwan crossroads. that’s restaurant immortality.
the thali comes with 3 sabzis, roti, puri, bhakhari, farsan, dal, bhat, kadhi, khichdi, and sweets. the variety of chutneys and papads is what sets it apart.
but i’ll be straight - the glory days might be behind it. recent reviews mention hygiene issues, rude staff, and inconsistent food quality. it’s still a solid thali, but it’s coasting on legacy more than current excellence. go for the history, adjust expectations for the present.
verdict: historically important, currently decent. worth visiting once to say you ate where the gujarati thali was born. just don’t expect agashiye-level quality.
5. iscon thal
sg highway / rs 700 for two / 7.5/10

awarded for “most authentic gujarati thali” and located at iscon circle on sg highway, this is a solid mid-range option. the thali has 4 sabzis, dal, kadhi, chaat, appetizers, chutneys, salad, khichdi, flatbreads, desserts, and a beverage.
good for when you want a proper thali without the premium price tag of agashiye or the tourist-heavy vibe of vishala. it’s straightforward, filling, and reasonably priced.
some complaints about too many sweet dishes and not enough variety in savoury options, but overall it delivers what it promises.
verdict: reliable mid-range thali on sg highway. nothing life-changing, but you won’t be disappointed either.
street food favorites
ahmedabad’s street food game is elite. like, genuinely world-class. these aren’t restaurants in the traditional sense - they’re institutions.
6. manek chowk night market
old city (manek chowk) / rs 400 for two / 9/10

during the day, it’s a jewellery market. by 8pm, the gold traders pack up and the food carts roll in. manek chowk transforms into ahmedabad’s biggest open-air food court, and it stays alive until 2am on weekends.
you have to try: butter pulao, gotalo dosa (a messy, magnificent mashup of dosa, cheese, and pav bhaji masala), pineapple ice cream sandwich (trust me), and the legendary bastiram’s kulfi which has been around since 1947.
the crowd is a mix of students on scooters, families sharing plates, jewellers winding down, and tourists with cameras. it’s chaotic, loud, and absolutely magical.
verdict: if you’re in ahmedabad for one night, spend it here. no restaurant in the city can replicate this energy. go between 9pm-midnight for peak experience.
7. swati snacks
law garden (cg road) / rs 500 for two / 8.5/10

swati is what happens when street food gets a proper restaurant treatment. they take traditional gujarati snacks - dahi batata puri, paneer lifafa, thali peeth, dal dhokli - and serve them in a clean, modern, cafeteria-style setup with brushed steel tables.
the lemongrass ice cream is a must-try. the khandvi is perfect. the malai malpua for dessert will make you question every malpua you’ve had before.
is it overhyped? some amdavadis will say yes, the prices are higher than what you’d pay at a street stall for similar food. but the consistency, hygiene, and quality justify it. think of it as street food without the stomach risk.
verdict: best gujarati snack restaurant in ahmedabad. cleaner than the street, tastier than most restaurants. perfect introduction to gujarati farsan if you’re not from here.
8. das khaman
multiple locations (navrangpura, paldi, prahlad nagar) / rs 200 for two / 8.5/10

operating since 1922. that’s over 100 years of making khaman. if you don’t know what khaman is - it’s a steamed chickpea flour cake, soft and spongy, topped with mustard seeds and curry leaves. it’s the most gujarati thing you can eat.
das khaman makes about a dozen varieties, and the sev khamani is the one to get. rs 30 per plate. thirty rupees. for food that’s been perfected over a century.
multiple branches across the city. grab a plate, eat standing, move on. that’s the ahmedabad way.
verdict: cheapest great food in ahmedabad. 100+ years in business and still rs 30 a plate. respect.
9. chandravilas
lal darwaja / rs 300 for two / 8/10

opened in 1900. one hundred and twenty-five years old. chandravilas started as a tea cart and grew into the restaurant that introduced the pairing of fafda and jalebi to ahmedabad. the tradition of eating fafda-jalebi on dussehra? it started here.
gandhi ate here. sardar patel ate here. amitabh bachchan ate here. now you should too.
the fafda has perfect crispness, the jalebi is made in pure ghee, and the papaya chutney ties it all together. when you walk in, the old amdavad-style wooden doors, vintage mirrors, and century-old sculptures remind you that this place has history baked into its walls.
verdict: ahmedabad’s most historic restaurant. the fafda-jalebi here isn’t just food, it’s cultural heritage. go on a sunday morning.
10. jay bhavani vadapav
multiple locations (cg road, bodakdev, vastrapur, satellite) / rs 200 for two / 8/10

started as a humble street cart in 1998, now has 195+ franchises across india and even canada. that growth tells you everything about the quality.
the vadapav is simple but executed perfectly. crispy on the outside, spicy potato filling inside, served with green chutney and dry garlic chutney. some locations also do schezwan vadapav and cheese vadapav for the adventurous.
you’ll find a jay bhavani within 2km of wherever you are in ahmedabad. perfect for a quick rs 50-70 snack when you need fuel between meals.
verdict: ahmedabad’s answer to mumbai’s vadapav. fast, cheap, reliable, and somehow tasty every single time across every location.
fine dining & special occasions
for when you want to spend more and feel fancy. ahmedabad’s fine dining scene is smaller than mumbai or delhi, but these places hold their own.
11. patang revolving restaurant
ashram road / rs 3500 for two / 8/10

india’s first revolving restaurant, 221 feet above ground, completing a full 360-degree rotation every 90 minutes. you get a panoramic view of the sabarmati riverfront, old city, and new ahmedabad - all while eating.
the menu is multi-cuisine, curated by masterchef ajay chopra. the experience is genuinely unique. sitting 221 feet up, watching ahmedabad slowly spin around you while eating is something you can’t replicate.
now the honest part: the food is fine, not spectacular. you’re paying for the view and the concept more than the food. some reviews mention slow service and high prices. but for a date or anniversary dinner, the experience factor makes up for it.
verdict: best date restaurant in ahmedabad. the food won’t blow your mind but the 360-degree city view at sunset will. go for the experience, not the cuisine.
12. rajwadu
vejalpur / rs 1800 for two / 8.5/10

spread over 12,000 square yards, rajwadu is a gujarati village recreated as a restaurant. established in 1998, it represents the ancient culture and lifestyle of indian villages. there are puppet shows for kids, folk music, and dance performances while you eat a massive gujarati thali in an open garden setting.
the food is solid traditional gujarati - dal, bhat, rotla, bajra rotla, seasonal sabzis, and an embarrassing number of sweets. the ambience does 70% of the work, but the food backs it up.
it’s similar to vishala in concept but feels more polished and commercial. great for large groups, family dinners, or taking guests from out of town.
verdict: best restaurant for groups in ahmedabad. the cultural experience + food combo is perfect for impressing guests. book ahead for weekends.
13. sante spa cuisine
thaltej / rs 2200 for two / 8/10

this is for the health-conscious crowd that still wants their food to taste good. sante does vegan and vegetarian cuisine using organic, locally-sourced ingredients. millet pizzas, smoothie bowls, cold-pressed juices, and a full three-course vegan spread including desserts.
the menu is split into regular, jain, and vegan sections. the ambience is elegant and calming. rated 4.5/5 across platforms.
it’s pricey for what it is, but the quality of ingredients and the innovation in making healthy food actually delicious is impressive. not your typical ahmedabad restaurant experience, which is kind of the point.
verdict: best healthy restaurant in ahmedabad. if you’re vegan, plant-based, or just tired of fried food after 3 days of gujarati thalis, this is your reset button.
14. collage (hyatt regency)
vastrapur / rs 4000 for two / 7.5/10

hyatt’s signature restaurant serving continental, north indian, and mughlai cuisine with lake views. it’s one of the few places in ahmedabad where you can get high-quality non-veg in a proper fine dining setup.
the murgh musallam and butter chicken are standouts. the ambience is what you’d expect from a hyatt - polished, comfortable, lake-facing.
it’s expensive and honestly, for that price in ahmedabad, some people would rather eat at 4-5 other places. but if you want that five-star hotel dining experience with proper non-veg options, this is it.
verdict: best hotel restaurant in ahmedabad. come when you want to treat someone (or yourself) to a proper five-star meal.
casual dining
everyday restaurants for when you want to sit down, eat well, and not think too hard about it.
15. tomato’s
cg road (navrangpura) / rs 1200 for two / 7.5/10

a rock-and-roll themed diner on cg road that’s been around since the early 2000s. the decor is fun - think american diner meets bollywood. they serve everything from mexican hotpots to pizzas to butter chicken.
portions are generous but prices are on the higher side for what’s essentially casual food. my advice: stick to the indian dishes. the continental and mexican options are decent but not their strength.
popular with college crowds and families. gets loud on weekends.
verdict: fun casual dining spot on cg road. go for the vibes and indian food, skip the western menu items.
16. honest restaurant
multiple locations (bodakdev, prahlad nagar, satellite, maninagar) / rs 650 for two / 7.5/10

the everyday ahmedabad restaurant. honest is to ahmedabad what udupi is to bangalore - a reliable chain that serves decent gujarati, punjabi, and chinese food at fair prices.
the pav bhaji is solid. the masala dosa at rs 80 is a good deal. the fixed thalis starting at rs 130 are perfect for a quick, filling lunch. no one goes to honest expecting a life-changing meal, and that’s fine. it’s consistent, it’s everywhere, and it fills you up.
quality varies by location. the bodakdev branch is generally better than the railway station one.
verdict: most reliable everyday restaurant in ahmedabad. not exciting, but never disappointing. the one you go to when you can’t decide where to eat.
17. sankalp
multiple locations (cg road, bodakdev, sg highway) / rs 1200 for two / 7/10

ahmedabad’s go-to south indian restaurant for the past 25 years. dosas, idlis, uttapams, and the unlimited sambar-chutney combo is genuinely good. the masala boondi and spring dosa are worth ordering.
here’s my issue: it’s overpriced. the dosa sizes have shrunk, the prices have gone up, and you’re paying hotel-level prices for restaurant-level food. still tasty, but the value proposition has weakened over the years.
the 5 types of chutney and coconut paan at the end are nice touches that keep people coming back.
verdict: good south indian food, just not worth the premium anymore. go if you’re craving dosa and don’t mind paying extra for consistency.
18. the nine (ymca international centre)
prahlad nagar / rs 1100 for two / 7.5/10

multi-cuisine restaurant inside ymca international centre that’s become a go-to for prahlad nagar residents. the mezze platter and tandoori broccoli are both surprisingly good. they handle both veg and non-veg well, which is rare in ahmedabad.
nice ambience, reasonable portions, and it doesn’t try too hard to be something it’s not. just solid food in a clean space.
verdict: good all-rounder in prahlad nagar. nothing to complain about, a few things to praise.
non-veg spots
ahmedabad is famously vegetarian, but the non-veg scene exists and it’s concentrated in very specific areas. most of these are in the old city. here’s where to find the meat.
19. bhatiyar gali
old city (near teen darwaja) / rs 400 for two / 9/10

this isn’t a restaurant. it’s a 600-year-old street that translates to “street of cooks.” when sultan ahmed shah came to ahmedabad, the cooks (bhatiyars) who traveled with him settled here. six centuries later, their descendants are still cooking.
the entire lane is lined with small joints serving sizzling kebabs, tandoori chicken, mutton preparations, keema samosas, and chicken angaar. you walk through, pick what looks good, sit on plastic chairs, and eat food that’s been perfected over generations.
come with an empty stomach and no expectations of fancy decor. this is street food at its most raw and authentic.
verdict: best non-veg experience in ahmedabad, hands down. it’s not a restaurant, it’s a food pilgrimage. go after 7pm.
20. akbari hotel
bhatiyar gali / rs 500 for two / 8.5/10

the most famous name in bhatiyar gali. a small food joint where the five-page menu is entirely chicken-based. chicken handi, chicken afghani, chicken angara, chicken lollipops - if it can be done to chicken, akbari does it.
the portions are generous, the spice levels are serious, and the prices are student-friendly. don’t expect ambience or fancy service. expect incredible chicken.
verdict: best chicken in ahmedabad at budget prices. the chicken angaar alone is worth the trip to the old city.
21. zamzam hotel
bhatiyar gali / rs 450 for two / 8/10

zamzam is akbari’s neighbor and rival. while akbari dominates chicken, zamzam’s strengths are in the chap fry, butter chicken, chicken masala, and paplet fish. the mutton keema is a regular favorite.
slightly less crowded than akbari, which means you might actually get a seat without waiting. the quality is comparable, and some locals swear zamzam is actually better.
verdict: akbari’s worthy rival. if akbari is too crowded (it usually is), come here. you won’t notice the difference.
22. mirch masala
cg road / sg highway / chandkheda / rs 900 for two / 7.5/10

ahmedabad’s first “theme restaurant” since 1992, and one of the few places where veg and non-veg sit under the same roof. the kebabs are genuinely good, the biryani is decent, and the dum style preparations have their fans.
multiple locations across the city. the cg road branch is the original and generally considered the best. prices are fair for the quality.
not the best non-veg in ahmedabad (bhatiyar gali wins that easily), but it’s the best non-veg in a proper sit-down restaurant setting.
verdict: best sit-down non-veg restaurant in ahmedabad. when you want meat but also want air conditioning and a chair with a back.
23. food inn
lal darwaja (ashram road) / rs 450 for two / 7/10

budget-friendly non-veg near sidi saiyyed’s jali. lamb, chicken, and north indian dishes at prices that won’t hurt. the staff is friendly and the service is quick.
the biryani isn’t dum-style which disappointed me (and several reviewers), but the curries and kebabs make up for it. good for a quick, cheap non-veg meal in the old city area.
parking can be a problem on weekdays. plan accordingly.
verdict: decent budget non-veg near lal darwaja. won’t blow your mind, but your wallet will survive intact.
cafe-restaurants
for when you want something lighter than a full restaurant meal but more than just coffee. check out my cafes in ahmedabad guide for more options.
24. zen cafe
navrangpura (university area) / rs 700 for two / 7.5/10

located at amdavad ni gufa (the underground art gallery by hussain and doshi), zen cafe has an atmosphere you can’t replicate. the setting alone - next to a cave-shaped gallery with organic architecture - makes it worth a visit.
the food is standard cafe fare: fast food, chinese, italian, desserts. nothing exceptional but decent. the hot chocolate is notably good. mostly you’re here for the vibe and the proximity to the gallery.
verdict: best cafe for artsy vibes in ahmedabad. eat here, then visit the gallery. or visit the gallery, then eat here. either way, do both.
25. skyz restaurant & banquet
prahlad nagar / rs 1200 for two / 7/10

rooftop restaurant in prahlad nagar known for candlelight dinner setups and live music on weekends. the karari roomali roti is their signature. both indoor and outdoor seating available.
popular as a date spot and anniversary dinner destination. the food is decent - north indian, chinese, continental - but the rooftop setting is what you’re really paying for.
verdict: good rooftop dining option for couples. the food is secondary to the ambience, and that’s fine for a date night.

- best area for sit-down restaurants: sg highway / bodakdev / prahlad nagar
questions people ask about ahmedabad restaurants
which is the best restaurant in ahmedabad?
depends on what you’re after. for gujarati thali, agashiye at house of mg is the gold standard. for the full cultural experience, vishala in vasna. for casual everyday eating, honest restaurant across any location. for non-veg, bhatiyar gali as a whole street beats any single restaurant. if i had to pick one overall, agashiye.
best vegetarian restaurant in ahmedabad?
agashiye for premium gujarati thali, gordhan thal for value-for-money unlimited thali, swati snacks for gujarati street food done right, and sante spa cuisine if you want healthy vegan options. ahmedabad is a vegetarian paradise so you’re spoiled for choice.

jay bhavani vadapav (rs 200 for two), das khaman (rs 200 for two), chandravilas (rs 300 for two), honest restaurant (rs 350 for two), and manek chowk street food (rs 200-400 for two). ahmedabad is one of the cheapest cities to eat well in india.

best gujarati thali in ahmedabad?
agashiye for the premium experience with seasonal menus in silver thalis. gordhan thal in bodakdev for unlimited thali at a fair price. pakwan dining hall for the og experience since it literally invented the gujarati thali concept. and vishala for the village-style cultural experience.
that’s 25 restaurants. some visited, most researched obsessively, all written about honestly.
ahmedabad’s food scene is underrated. not because the food isn’t good - it’s incredible - but because gujarati food doesn’t get the same national hype as hyderabadi biryani or delhi’s street food. which is a shame, because a gujarati thali at agashiye or a midnight food crawl at manek chowk is genuinely one of the best food experiences you can have in india.
