tl;dr: everything about jay prakash narayan airport patna. new terminal, airlines, routes, facilities, parking, how to reach, and the status of international flights. updated 2026.
tldr: jay prakash narayan airport patna got a massive upgrade in june 2025. the new terminal handles 1 crore passengers annually with 5 aerobridges, 13 boarding gates, 64 check-in counters, and digi yatri. airlines: indigo dominates, plus air india, spicejet, akasa. flights to all major indian cities. no international flights yet but the infrastructure supports it. the old terminal was embarrassing. the new one actually feels like an airport. here’s everything you need to know.
on my last trip to patna, i landed at the new terminal. and i’ll be honest, for about thirty seconds after walking off the aerobridge, i forgot i was in patna.
the terminal was clean. the signage was clear. the baggage belt actually worked without the usual prayer. there was air conditioning that functioned. it felt like landing at a proper airport.
this matters because for years, the old patna airport terminal was a running joke. anyone who flew through it remembers: the cramped waiting area, the single belt that took forever, the feeling that you were in a bus station that happened to have a runway. relatives would apologize for it before you even landed. “airport thoda chhota hai, adjust karna.”
that airport doesn’t exist anymore.
jay prakash narayan airport got its new terminal on june 3, 2025, and it’s genuinely one of the most visible signs that patna is changing. this guide covers everything about the new terminal, how to use it, how to get there, and what to expect.
the new terminal: by the numbers
| parameter | detail |
|---|---|
| terminal area | 65,150 sq metres |
| annual passenger capacity | 1 crore (10 million) |
| peak hour capacity | 3,000 passengers |
| aerobridges | 5 |
| boarding gates | 13 |
| check-in counters | 64 |
| conveyor belts (arrivals) | 4 |
| floors | 2 (departures on top, arrivals below) |
| digi yatri gates | yes (contactless travel) |
| automatic tray retrieval systems | 9 |
| cost of construction | rs 1,210 crore (approx) |
| inaugurated by | PM narendra modi |
| operational since | june 3, 2025 |
what the old terminal was
for context: the old terminal was built decades ago for a fraction of the current traffic. it had a capacity of about 17 lakh passengers annually. by the time the new terminal opened, patna airport was handling close to 70 lakh passengers, meaning the old terminal was operating at roughly 4x its designed capacity.
that explains the overcrowding, the long queues, the lack of seating, and the general chaos. it wasn’t that patna couldn’t manage an airport. the airport literally couldn’t handle patna.
what the new terminal is
two-storey design with departures on the upper level and arrivals on the ground level. this is standard for modern airports but was new for patna.
departures level:
- 64 check-in counters (most airlines now have dedicated counters)
- security check with 9 automatic tray retrieval systems (faster screening)
- digi yatri facial recognition gates for registered passengers
- 13 boarding gates with 5 aerobridge-connected
- food court with multiple outlets
- duty-free style retail (limited selection currently)
- prayer room, baby care room
- business lounge (available through credit cards and airline programs)
- free wifi throughout
arrivals level:
- 4 conveyor belts (previously there were 2, and both were slow)
- prepaid taxi counter
- car rental desks
- waiting area for meeters/greeters
- ATMs and currency exchange
- information desk
the terminal design incorporates elements inspired by bihar’s cultural heritage, including motifs from nalanda and the mauryan period. it’s tastefully done, not gaudy.
airlines and routes
airlines operating from patna
| airline | key routes from patna | approximate daily departures |
|---|---|---|
| indigo | delhi, mumbai, bangalore, kolkata, hyderabad, chennai, lucknow, ranchi, ahmedabad, pune, goa | 15-20 |
| air india | delhi, mumbai, kolkata, bangalore | 4-6 |
| spicejet | delhi, mumbai, hyderabad, bangalore | 3-5 |
| akasa air | delhi, mumbai, bangalore, ahmedabad | 3-4 |
| air india express | select routes (previously air asia india) | 1-3 |
| alliance air | regional routes (ranchi, varanasi, deoghar) | 1-2 |
flight counts are approximate and vary by season. summer schedule typically has more flights than winter.
indigo dominates patna airport, operating roughly 50-60% of all flights. this is consistent with their dominance at most indian airports, but particularly pronounced in patna.
popular routes and approximate fares
| route | distance | flight time | fare range (one-way) | daily flights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| patna to delhi | 1,000 km | 1h 45m | rs 3,000-8,000 | 8-12 |
| patna to mumbai | 1,500 km | 2h 30m | rs 4,000-10,000 | 4-6 |
| patna to bangalore | 1,800 km | 2h 45m | rs 4,500-12,000 | 3-5 |
| patna to kolkata | 500 km | 1h 10m | rs 2,500-6,000 | 4-6 |
| patna to hyderabad | 1,400 km | 2h 15m | rs 3,500-9,000 | 2-4 |
| patna to chennai | 1,700 km | 2h 30m | rs 4,000-10,000 | 1-2 |
| patna to lucknow | 550 km | 1h 15m | rs 2,500-5,000 | 1-2 |
| patna to ranchi | 300 km | 50m | rs 2,000-4,500 | 2-3 |
| patna to ahmedabad | 1,400 km | 2h 15m | rs 3,500-8,000 | 1-2 |
| patna to pune | 1,500 km | 2h 30m | rs 4,000-9,000 | 1-2 |
fares vary wildly based on booking time, season, and availability. book 2-3 weeks ahead for best prices. diwali, chhath puja, and summer vacation are peak seasons when fares can double or triple.
the delhi route
the patna-delhi route is by far the busiest. 8-12 daily flights across airlines. this is driven by the massive bihari diaspora in delhi/NCR and the fact that delhi serves as a connecting hub for international flights.
tip from experience: if you’re flying patna-delhi, the early morning flights (6-7 am departures) are usually cheapest and most on-time. the evening flights (post 6 pm) are frequently delayed.
the kolkata route
patna-kolkata is short (1h 10m) and well-served. however, the bus/train connection is also strong (rajdhani takes about 6 hours), so flights are only worth it if the fare difference is reasonable or you’re connecting onwards.
seasonal patterns
patna airport sees massive demand spikes during:
- chhath puja (october/november) - the biggest. flights sell out weeks ahead. fares skyrocket. this is when the bihari diaspora returns en masse
- diwali - similar pattern
- summer vacation (may-june) - families traveling
- new year - moderate spike
book well in advance for chhath puja travel. i’m talking 4-6 weeks minimum. fares during chhath can hit rs 15,000-20,000 one-way for patna-delhi, a route that’s normally rs 3,500-5,000.
the international flights question
this comes up constantly. does patna have international flights?
the short answer
as of early 2026, no regular scheduled international flights operate from patna.
the longer answer
patna airport had international flights until the late 1990s, including services to kathmandu and some gulf destinations. these were discontinued and never resumed.
the new terminal has been designed with international flight capability. there’s customs and immigration infrastructure that can be activated. the runway and taxiway support wide-body aircraft. the capacity is there.
there have been active proposals and discussions about resuming international flights, particularly to:
- kathmandu (nepal) - strong cultural and economic ties, short distance
- gulf destinations (dubai, sharjah, doha) - large bihari worker population in the gulf
- southeast asia (bangkok, kuala lumpur) - potential tourist demand
the main barriers are:
- traffic justification: airlines need confidence that enough passengers will fill international routes year-round, not just during festivals
- regulatory approvals: international operations require multiple clearances
- ground infrastructure: while the terminal supports international flights, the full ground handling ecosystem for international operations needs to be established
my realistic assessment: patna will likely get at least one international route (kathmandu or a gulf city) within the next 2-3 years. the infrastructure is ready. the demand, particularly for gulf routes, is strong. it’s a matter of when, not if.
how to reach the airport
from patna junction (railway station)
- distance: approximately 7 km
- by auto-rickshaw: rs 100-150, 20-30 minutes
- by taxi app (ola/uber): rs 120-200, 15-25 minutes
- by prepaid taxi: rs 150-200 (counter at patna junction)
the route goes through danapur road. traffic can be heavy during peak hours (9-11 am, 5-7 pm). for morning flights, leave at least 45 minutes before your planned airport arrival time.
from boring road area
- distance: approximately 10 km
- by auto-rickshaw: rs 150-200, 25-40 minutes
- by taxi app: rs 150-250, 20-30 minutes
boring road traffic is the wild card. what should be a 20-minute ride can become 40+ minutes during peak hours. plan accordingly.
from kankarbagh
- distance: approximately 8 km
- by auto-rickshaw: rs 120-170, 20-35 minutes
- by taxi app: rs 130-220, 15-25 minutes
from rajendra nagar
- distance: approximately 5 km
- by auto-rickshaw: rs 80-120, 15-25 minutes
- by taxi app: rs 100-150, 10-20 minutes
rajendra nagar is one of the closest residential areas to the airport, which makes it a popular choice for people who fly frequently.
from the metro
the patna metro’s red line terminus at danapur cantonment is approximately 5 km from the airport. there’s no direct metro-to-airport connection currently. from danapur station, you’ll need an auto-rickshaw (rs 50-80, 10-15 minutes) to reach the airport.
when more stations become operational, taking the metro to danapur and then an auto to the airport will likely be the fastest option from most parts of the city, especially during peak traffic hours.
driving and parking
if you’re being dropped off, use the dedicated drop-off zone on the departures level. it’s a brief stop area, no parking allowed.
for parking:
| vehicle | first hour | each additional hour | 24 hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| car | rs 50 | rs 30 | rs 300 |
| two-wheeler | rs 20 | rs 15 | rs 100 |
| SUV/large vehicle | rs 60 | rs 40 | rs 400 |
the multi-level parking has around 500+ car slots. it fills up during peak departures (early morning and evening). if you’re driving yourself and parking for multiple days, the cost adds up quickly. consider getting dropped off or taking a taxi instead.
airport facilities guide
food and beverage
the new terminal has significantly more food options than the old one.
before security (check-in area):
- cafe coffee day
- local food stalls
- water and snack vending machines
after security (boarding area):
- food court with 4-5 outlets
- a sit-down restaurant
- cafe
- packaged snack shops
pricing: airport pricing applies. expect to pay 30-50% more than outside. a coffee is rs 150-200. a sandwich or wrap is rs 250-350. a full meal is rs 400-600. the food quality has improved from the old terminal (where options were limited to sad-looking samosas), but it’s still airport food.
tip: eat before you come to the airport. the restaurants near danapur road and even a quick stop at a boring road cafe makes more sense than paying airport prices.
lounges
the new terminal has a lounge accessible through:
- premium credit cards (check your card’s lounge program)
- airline business class tickets
- lounge membership programs (priority pass, dreamfolks)
- pay-at-door (approximately rs 1,000-1,200 for 2 hours)
the lounge offers buffet food, beverages (non-alcoholic, bihar is a dry state), wifi, charging stations, and comfortable seating. it’s a good option if you have a long wait.
important: bihar is a dry state
this catches some travelers off guard. bihar has alcohol prohibition since 2016. this means:
- no alcohol is served anywhere in the airport
- no duty-free alcohol shops
- carrying alcohol into bihar is illegal
- this applies to all passengers, regardless of where they’re coming from
the lounges serve soft drinks, tea, coffee, and juices. no alcohol exceptions.
wifi
free wifi is available throughout the terminal. connect to the “AAI_Free_WiFi” network and register with your phone number. speed is adequate for browsing and messaging but not great for video calls or large downloads.
charging stations
multiple charging points throughout the terminal, both at gate areas and in the general waiting area. some have wireless charging pads for compatible phones. the number is adequate but during busy hours, you might need to search a bit for an available one.
other facilities
- ATMs: SBI, HDFC, ICICI ATMs in both arrivals and departures areas
- baby care room: available in departures area
- prayer room: available
- information desk: near the main entrance and in the boarding area
- lost and found: at the arrivals level
- pharmacy: basic pharmacy near the arrivals exit
- SIM card counters: jio and airtel counters at arrivals
- wheelchair service: available on request (inform airline at booking)
domestic cargo terminal
often overlooked but important: the new domestic air cargo terminal opened in february 2025, ahead of the passenger terminal.
specs:
- capacity: 22,000 metric tonnes annually (tripled from 7,500 MT)
- modern cargo handling equipment
- cold storage facility (important for litchi, makhana, and other perishable goods)
this matters for bihar’s economy. the state produces enormous quantities of agricultural goods that lose value in transit due to inadequate cold chain and slow transport. air cargo from patna means bihar’s litchi, makhana, and other perishable products can reach national and international markets faster, with better quality preservation.
for the startup ecosystem, especially agri-tech companies, the cargo terminal is a significant infrastructure upgrade.
tips from experience
these are based on my own flights through patna and advice from family who fly regularly.
arrive early (but not too early)
for domestic flights, arrive 2 hours before departure. the new terminal processes faster than the old one, but during peak hours (early morning flights, 5-7 am departures), the security line can build up. don’t arrive 3 hours early though, there’s only so much you can do at the airport.
the early morning chaos
patna’s busiest departure window is 5:30-7:30 am. multiple flights to delhi, mumbai, and bangalore leave in this window. the check-in area can feel hectic. if you’ve done web check-in and have only cabin luggage, skip the counter entirely and head straight to security.
web check-in is your friend
every airline now offers web check-in 24-72 hours before departure. do it. print your boarding pass or save it on your phone. this alone saves 15-20 minutes at the airport.
the auto-rickshaw negotiation
when you arrive at patna airport, you’ll be greeted by auto-rickshaw drivers outside the arrivals exit. they will quote inflated prices. the going rate from airport to:
- boring road: rs 150-200
- patna junction: rs 100-150
- kankarbagh: rs 120-170
- patliputra colony: rs 100-150
- rajendra nagar: rs 80-120
use the prepaid taxi counter inside the arrivals hall for fixed rates, or book an ola/uber from the designated cab pickup area. auto drivers outside will always quote 50-100% above the actual rate.
the chhath puja survival guide
if you’re flying during chhath puja, book at least 4-6 weeks in advance. arrive 2.5-3 hours before your flight. expect the terminal to be packed. have backup plans. flights get delayed or cancelled due to fog (if chhath falls in late november) and sheer traffic volume.
family advice from my cousins: “chhath ke time train pakdo, flight ka bharosa nahi.” take the train during chhath, don’t trust flights. it’s extreme but not bad advice for the busiest travel days.
the fog factor
november through january, patna airport is affected by fog, particularly in early morning hours. flights before 9 am are frequently delayed or diverted during peak fog season. if you have a connecting flight, don’t book a tight connection during these months. a 3-hour layover is the minimum safe buffer.
how patna airport compares
for perspective, here’s how the new terminal stacks up against similar indian airports.
| airport | annual capacity | aerobridges | check-in counters |
|---|---|---|---|
| patna (new) | 1 crore | 5 | 64 |
| lucknow (new) | 1.3 crore | 8 | 72 |
| jaipur (T2) | 1 crore | 6 | 60 |
| varanasi (new) | 90 lakh | 5 | 50 |
| ranchi | 50 lakh | 3 | 28 |
| bhubaneswar (new) | 1 crore | 6 | 60 |
patna’s new terminal is competitive with the best tier-2 city airports in india. it’s not chandigarh or goa (international airports with flashier designs), but it’s a legitimate, modern, functional airport. for a city that had one of the worst airport experiences in the country until recently, that’s a massive upgrade.
the runway and future expansion
the current runway at patna airport is 7,000 feet (2,134 meters), which handles all narrow-body aircraft (A320, B737 families) that serve domestic routes. for wide-body aircraft needed for long-haul international flights, a runway extension or a second runway would likely be needed.
there have been discussions about runway expansion, but nothing has been formally announced as of 2026. the airport’s location (constrained by the ganga to the north and urban development on other sides) makes expansion challenging.
for the medium term, the current infrastructure comfortably serves the domestic market and can handle short-haul international routes (kathmandu, gulf) with existing aircraft types.
the transformation story
i keep coming back to the contrast because it’s so stark.
the old patna airport was, without exaggeration, one of the worst airport experiences in india. overcrowded to the point of danger during festivals. a single cramped security check. a “lounge” that was a few chairs in a corner. baggage that arrived on a belt that moved at the speed of bureaucracy.
people who hadn’t been to patna in years would land and immediately think, “yep, this is bihar.” the airport confirmed every stereotype.
the new terminal breaks that. it’s the first impression of patna for anyone arriving by air, and that first impression is now modern, clean, functional. it’s not a luxury international terminal. but it’s a proper airport that a growing city deserves.
when i landed there on my last visit and walked through the aerobridge (aerobridge! in patna!), the feeling was specific to anyone from bihar. a mix of pride, relief, and a slightly defiant “told you so” to everyone who ever said nothing would change.
patna is changing. the airport is the first thing you see. and it sets the tone.
