tldr: out of 15 PGs and hostels i researched across patna, my top picks are guardian boys hostel (best value near coaching centers, rs 5,000), haven stay (best facilities, rs 6,500+), and vedanta girls hostel (best for women, rs 4,500-6,500). boring road is the most expensive area but closest to coaching. kankarbagh and rajendra nagar are 30-40% cheaper. full breakdown with prices, facilities, and area guide below.

every year, tens of thousands of students move to patna for one reason: coaching.

BPSC, UPSC, SSC, banking exams. the dream is a sarkari naukri and the road to it runs through boring road, bailey road, and the cramped coaching centers scattered across the city. patna is my hometown, and every time i visit i see this migration happening. cousins, family friends, people from gaya, bhagalpur, muzaffarpur, darbhanga, all landing in patna with a suitcase, a dream, and the most urgent question anyone moving to a new city has.

where do i stay?

the PG hunt in patna is brutal. you’ll find brokers who’ll show you a “furnished room” that turns out to be a mattress on the floor with a broken fan. you’ll find hostels that look fine in photos and smell like drain water in person. and you’ll find places that are genuinely good but nobody talks about because they don’t advertise.

my cousins have been through this. friends have been through this. i spent weeks talking to students, checking platforms like 99acres, sulekha, nobroker, and studentcosy, visiting hostels on my trips, and cross-referencing google maps reviews to put together a list that actually helps. no broker paid me. no hostel sponsored this. just honest recommendations.

premium PGs (rs 6,500+)

these are for students whose parents can stretch the budget a bit, or working professionals who want a place that doesn’t feel like a hostel from the 90s.

1. haven stay

boring road / rs 6,500+ per month / breakfast included / wifi: yes

haven stay is probably the most “modern” hostel experience you’ll find in patna right now. clean rooms, proper beds (not the broken cots you’ll find in most PGs), and a vibe that feels closer to what you’d expect in pune or bangalore. they have both boys and girls options.

the breakfast is included in the rent, which is a nice touch. rooms come in single, double, and triple sharing. AC rooms cost more. no mandatory lock-in period, but you need to inform them 15 days before leaving.

the catch? boring road pricing. rs 6,500 is the starting point and it goes up depending on room type. if you’re on a BPSC budget surviving on rs 8,000-10,000 a month total, this eats a huge chunk.

verdict: best facilities in patna. worth it if you can afford it. not the best value for broke coaching students.

2. umang boys hostel

patliputra colony, boring road / rs 6,000-8,000 per month / meals included / wifi: yes

umang sits in new patliputra colony, which is a slightly quieter pocket near boring road. the interiors are well-designed and the rooms are fully furnished. food quality is consistently praised in reviews (4.3 rating on justdial). they serve proper home-style meals, not the watered-down dal you get at some hostels.

the location works well if you’re attending coaching on boring road but want to live somewhere that’s not in the middle of the chaos. it’s a 5-10 minute auto ride from most coaching centers.

verdict: best for working professionals or students who want a quieter environment without being too far from the action.

3. sri hanuman boys hostel

boring road / rs 5,000-7,000 per month / meals included / wifi: yes

14+ years in the business, which says something. sri hanuman is one of the OG hostels on boring road. spacious rooms, washing machine access, freezer, induction, and the management gets decent reviews. the rooms are airy, which matters a lot in patna summers when you’re trying to study.

they don’t nickel-and-dime you on amenities. the fee covers everything. the building is on boring road itself, so coaching centers are literally outside your door.

verdict: reliable, well-established. the kind of hostel your parents will feel comfortable sending you to.

mid-range PGs (rs 4,500-6,500)

this is where most coaching students end up. decent facilities, meals included, close enough to coaching centers that you can walk or take a 10-rupee auto.

4. guardian boys hostel

south s.k. puri, boring road / rs 5,000 per month / all meals included / wifi: yes

my top recommendation for BPSC/UPSC aspirants. rs 5,000 gets you accommodation, breakfast, lunch, evening snacks, and dinner. that’s your food problem solved. the hostel is centrally located among major coaching institutes and CBSE schools in the boring road belt.

facilities include 24-hour security, intercom in every room, daily room cleaning, doctor on call, and even a parents’ room for when your family visits. they also offer pick and drop to stations and exam centers, which is clutch during exam season.

single and double occupancy available. the rooms are no-frills but clean and functional. you’re here to study, not to admire the wallpaper.

verdict: best value in patna for coaching students. rs 5,000 all-inclusive is hard to beat.

5. vedanta girls hostel

boring road (opposite A.N. college) / rs 4,500-6,500 per month / meals included / wifi: yes

vedanta is a solid girls hostel on boring road with flexible room options. triple sharing at rs 4,500, double at rs 6,000, single at rs 6,500. all options include food and wifi. the location opposite A.N. college puts you right in the educational hub of patna.

CCTV cameras, furnished beds, study tables, attached washrooms, hot water, and 24-hour water supply. they also offer independent studio flat options for those who want more privacy (priced higher).

reviews are mixed though. 4.0 on justdial with some complaints about room maintenance and staff attitude. the affordable pricing and location make up for it, but visit in person before committing.

verdict: best girls’ option near boring road coaching centers. check the specific room you’re getting before paying.

6. mai hostel

51+ branches across patna / rs 4,500-7,000 per month / meals available / wifi: yes

mai hostel is the starbucks of patna hostels. 51+ branches, 5,100+ students, and locations near every major coaching center and institute in the city. this is the safe, predictable option. you know roughly what you’re getting regardless of which branch you pick.

standard facilities across branches: 24/7 security guards, CCTV surveillance, RO water, electricity backup, wifi, and home-cooked meals. room types range from single to triple sharing. the dual-layer security system (guards + centralized CCTV) is genuinely better than what most standalone PGs offer.

the downside is the cookie-cutter feel. some branches are better maintained than others. always check the specific branch you’ll be staying at, not just the brand.

verdict: the safe, scalable option. good if you want to switch locations without the hassle of finding a new PG.

7. laxmi girls hostel

kankarbagh (near sharda hospital) / rs 4,500-6,000 per month / meals included / wifi: yes

laxmi girls hostel is one of the most established women’s hostels in kankarbagh. 4.3 rating with nearly 400 reviews, which is massive for a patna hostel. the USP is security: 24-hour security guards, resident warden, CCTV, and a reputation that parents trust.

kankarbagh location means it’s cheaper than boring road but you’ll need 15-20 minutes by auto to reach boring road coaching centers. if your coaching is in kankarbagh area or if you’re attending college nearby, this is a no-brainer.

electricity backup, geyser, purified water, and medical facility available. the fooding is decent quality home-style meals.

verdict: best girls’ hostel in kankarbagh. the 400 reviews and high rating aren’t accidental. go see it.

budget options (rs 3,000-5,000)

the real patna coaching student experience. basic rooms, simple food, and a roof over your head while you grind through ncert notes at 2am.

8. om boys hostel

patel nagar (road no. 04) / rs 4,000-4,500 per month / meals included / wifi: yes

om boys hostel has been running for 15+ years from east patel nagar, which is strategically located between boring road and bailey road. both coaching hubs are accessible within minutes. rs 4,000 for triple sharing, rs 4,500 for double sharing, which includes meals.

the facilities list is surprisingly long for the price: acquaguard water purifier, generator backup, CCTV, common TV hall, wifi, common kitchen, hot water, attached washroom, and even medical facilities. fully furnished rooms with bed, study table, fan, and lights.

3.2 rating on justdial with 82 reviews. that’s honest. it’s a budget hostel, not a five-star. the rooms are functional, the food is edible, and the location is prime. for rs 4,000 a month in patna, you won’t find much better.

verdict: best budget option in patna. 15 years of operation means they know what students need.

9. memory boys hostel

bailey road / rs 4,000-5,500 per month / meals included / wifi: yes

if your coaching center is on bailey road (aakash, allen, or any of the NEET/JEE factories), memory boys hostel is within 50 meters. literally across the road. the convenience factor alone makes this worth considering.

sharing rooms, separate rooms, common living room, common dining room, CCTV, RO water, and parking. the basic package gets you a shared room with meals at around rs 4,000. single rooms push towards rs 5,500.

verdict: the bailey road equivalent of living next to your office. saves you auto fare and commute time.

10. p & u accommodation

teacher’s colony, kankarbagh / rs 4,000-5,500 per month / meals included / wifi: yes

this one caught my attention because of the 5.0 rating on plumint (though with fewer reviews). located in chitragupta nagar, teacher’s colony area of kankarbagh, which is a residential, relatively quiet pocket.

the pricing is budget-friendly and kankarbagh gives you access to cheaper food and services compared to boring road. the trade-off is commute time to coaching centers on boring road (20-25 minutes by auto).

verdict: hidden gem in kankarbagh. worth checking if you want a quieter neighborhood at lower prices.

11. ashiyana boys hostel

boring road (near A.N. college) / rs 4,500-6,000 per month / meals included / wifi: yes

ashiyana has been operating near anandpuri on west boring canal road. they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, covering all your meal needs. the location near A.N. college puts you in the educational zone of boring road.

they also have a girls’ branch (ashiyana girls hostel & PG), which is listed on tripadvisor, an unusual platform for a patna hostel. multiple branches suggest the operation has scaled decently.

verdict: a solid boring road option at slightly lower prices than the premium tier. nothing fancy, everything functional.

girls’ PGs and hostels

finding a safe PG as a woman in patna requires extra diligence. here are four options that have established reputations, proper security, and decent reviews.

12. vedanta girls hostel

covered above in mid-range section. boring road, rs 4,500-6,500, good location but mixed maintenance reviews.

13. new shahi girls hostel

langar toli (700m from PMCH) / rs 5,000-7,000 per month / meals included / wifi: yes

new shahi is well-positioned for anyone studying at or near PMCH, and it’s within walking distance of multiple coaching centers in the old patna area. they have an AC study center, terrace garden, elevator, 24/7 wifi, backup electricity, and round-the-clock security.

single and double rooms available. home-cooked meals included. the mandatory rules include paying rent before the 15th (rs 10/day late fine) and one month notice before vacating. registration charge of rs 500 is non-refundable.

verdict: best for girls near the PMCH/old patna area. the AC study center is a genuine differentiator, most hostels don’t have dedicated study spaces.

14. mum’s care girls hostel

kankarbagh / rs 5,000 per month / meals included / wifi: yes

straightforward, affordable, and in kankarbagh. rs 5,000 with food included is competitive pricing. the name suggests the vibe: homely, safe, maternal. multi-sharing options bring the cost down further.

kankarbagh has become a hub for budget girls’ hostels because the area is residential, relatively safe, and has good bus connectivity to boring road and bailey road. mum’s care fits squarely in this category.

verdict: budget girls’ option in a safe residential area. no frills but gets the job done.

15. maa bhagwati girls hostel

opposite PMCH, gyanpit lane / rs 4,000-5,500 per month / meals included / wifi: limited

located directly opposite PMCH, this is the go-to for medical students and anyone whose daily life revolves around the PMCH area. basic facilities, modest pricing, and a location that can’t be beaten if your institution is nearby.

24-hour water, security deposit required. the wifi situation is reportedly inconsistent, so if you need reliable internet for online classes or downloads, keep a mobile data backup.

verdict: functional, affordable, and directly opposite PMCH. perfect for medical students.

area guide: where to stay based on what you’re doing

boring road and s.k. puri

best for: BPSC, UPSC, SSC coaching price range: rs 5,000-8,000 why: this is where 80% of the coaching centers are. chanakya IAS, gyan IAS, eduteria, a one IAS, ensemble IAS, all clustered along boring road. living here means you can walk to class, come back for lunch, and walk back for the evening batch. no auto fare, no commute stress. for food options in this area, check the boring road food guide.

recommended PGs: guardian boys hostel, haven stay, vedanta girls hostel, sri hanuman boys hostel

bailey road

best for: NEET, JEE, and banking exam coaching price range: rs 4,000-6,500 why: aakash, allen, and several banking/SSC coaching centers are on bailey road. it’s slightly less expensive than boring road and equally well-connected. memory boys hostel is practically inside the coaching zone.

recommended PGs: memory boys hostel, om boys hostel (nearby in patel nagar)

kankarbagh

best for: budget students, girls looking for safe options price range: rs 3,500-5,500 why: 30-40% cheaper than boring road. residential area with good bus routes. the trade-off is a 15-20 minute auto ride to boring road, which costs rs 20-30 one way. if you’re saving rs 2,000/month on rent, that math still works out.

recommended PGs: laxmi girls hostel, mum’s care girls hostel, p & u accommodation

rajendra nagar

best for: the absolute tightest budgets price range: rs 2,500-4,500 why: cheapest area for PGs in patna. you can find basic shared rooms for rs 2,500-3,000. connectivity to boring road takes 20-30 minutes by auto. the area has its own SSC coaching centers (BSC coaching has been here for 28 years). if your coaching is in rajendra nagar itself, this is perfect.

recommended PGs: check local listings on 99acres and sulekha for rajendra nagar options

langar toli / exhibition road

best for: medical students, girls near PMCH price range: rs 4,000-7,000 why: close to PMCH, old patna coaching centers, and gandhi maidan. a different patna experience from the boring road bubble. new shahi girls hostel and maa bhagwati girls hostel are the top picks here.

recommended PGs: new shahi girls hostel, maa bhagwati girls hostel

what to check before booking (the survival checklist)

i’ve heard from cousins and friends who got burned by PGs that looked great on the phone and turned out to be nightmares. here’s what to verify before you hand over any money.

water supply

patna’s water situation is unpredictable. ask specifically: do they have a borewell or are they dependent on municipal supply? is there a water tank? how often does water actually come? in peak summer, some PGs run dry by afternoon. this is a dealbreaker.

electricity backup

patna gets power cuts. it’s gotten better but it hasn’t gone away. ask if they have a generator or inverter. how many hours of backup? does the backup cover fans and lights only, or also charging points? studying without a fan in a patna june is genuinely dangerous.

food quality

”meals included” means different things to different PGs. some serve proper home-style food with dal, sabzi, roti, rice, and occasionally non-veg. others serve watered-down dal with 3 rotis and call it dinner. ask current residents, not the manager. if possible, eat one meal there before booking.

roommate situation

in shared rooms, your roommate determines your experience more than any facility. ask if they group students by exam type (BPSC aspirants with BPSC aspirants, NEET with NEET). schedules differ wildly. a NEET student studying till 2am while you need to wake up at 5am for your morning batch is a recipe for conflict.

bathroom situation

attached vs common. how many people share one bathroom. is there hot water in winter (patna winters are cold, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise). is there a geyser or do you need a bucket heater. these things sound trivial until you’re standing in a queue at 6am in january.

safety and locks

for everyone but especially for women: check the locks. is there a proper bolt inside? CCTV in common areas? is there a warden or security guard who actually stays at night? ask to see the CCTV footage room if they claim to have cameras. some hostels install cameras but never turn them on.

location reality check

”near boring road” can mean 50 meters or 3 kilometers depending on who’s saying it. open google maps, pin the hostel, pin your coaching center, and check the actual walking/auto distance. anything over 2km adds up in auto fare over months.

money-saving tips

  1. negotiate for longer stays. most PGs will knock off rs 300-500 if you commit to 6 months or a year upfront. always ask.

  2. triple sharing saves the most. the difference between single and triple can be rs 2,000/month, that’s rs 24,000/year. if you can handle roommates, the savings are significant.

  3. kankarbagh over boring road. same quality of life, 30-40% cheaper. the auto fare difference doesn’t eat up the savings.

  4. eat outside strategically. some PGs charge less if you opt out of meals. if there’s a cheap mess nearby serving meals at rs 50-60, do the math. sometimes external food is both cheaper and better.

  5. avoid broker fees. most hostels and PGs in patna deal directly. if a broker is charging you, walk past them and call the hostel yourself. numbers are on google maps, justdial, and sulekha.

  6. visit before paying. never book a PG based on phone calls or photos alone. patna is a city where you need to see the room, smell the bathroom, and check the water pressure yourself. always.

  7. check the deposit terms. security deposits range from rs 2,000 to one month’s rent. clarify in writing when and how you get it back. verbal promises mean nothing.

final word

patna’s PG market is chaotic but there are genuinely good options if you know where to look. the coaching student economy has forced hostels to compete, which means better facilities at lower prices than you’d find in cities like delhi or pune. for a full picture of what living in patna costs beyond just accommodation, read the cost of living in patna guide.

boring road is the most convenient but most expensive. kankarbagh and rajendra nagar give you the same city at significantly lower costs. girls have fewer options than boys (as is frustratingly common across india) but the ones that exist, vedanta, laxmi, new shahi, are established and safe.

the most important advice i can give: visit in person. every single PG on this list could have changed management, raised prices, or let standards slip by the time you read this. trust your eyes over any review, including mine.

patna is hard. the coaching grind is harder. the least your accommodation should do is give you a clean bed, decent food, and a quiet corner to study. don’t settle for less.
