tl;dr: honest guide to 10 best mba colleges in bihar with CAT/MAT cutoffs, fees, average placements, and real talk about which ones actually deliver on promises.

tldr: top 3 picks: IIM bodh gaya (best overall, rs 12-15 lakh total, CAT 90+ percentile, avg placement rs 12-15 LPA), CIMP patna (best value, rs 5-7 lakh total, CAT/MAT accepted, avg placement rs 6-8 LPA), and patna women’s college mba (best for women on budget, rs 60,000-1,20,000 total). full breakdown of 10 colleges with cutoffs, fees, placements, and honest opinions below.

bihar and mba might not seem like an obvious combination to outsiders, but the demand here is real. every visit to patna, i hear about some cousin or family friend “preparing for CAT” or “doing mba from [insert college].” management education has become the default fallback plan for graduates who aren’t sure about competitive exams or technical careers.

the problem? most people in bihar make the mba decision based on marketing, not data. private colleges run full-page newspaper ads promising “100% placement” with “rs 10 lakh packages.” relatives recommend colleges based on which one their neighbor’s son attended in 2015. nobody talks about actual placement numbers, real fees after hidden charges, or whether the college even has AICTE approval.

this guide is based on research, conversations with mba graduates in my extended network, and publicly available data. no college paid me to be on this list.

tier 1: nationally competitive

1. IIM bodh gaya

IIM (central govt) / bodh gaya, gaya district / total fees: rs 12-15 lakh (2 years) / 9/10

let me start with the obvious: IIM bodh gaya is in a completely different universe from every other management college in bihar. established in 2015 as a mentee institute of IIM calcutta, it’s part of the IIM brand, which in india still opens doors that nothing else can.

the campus in bodh gaya is relatively new and still developing. it’s not the sprawling IIM ahmedabad or bangalore campus. but the academic rigor, case-study pedagogy, and placement process follow IIM standards. the faculty includes professors from IIM calcutta and other top institutions.

CAT cutoff (approximate):

  • general category: 90-95 percentile
  • OBC: 80-85 percentile
  • SC: 55-65 percentile
  • ST: 50-60 percentile
  • EWS: 85-90 percentile

strengths:

  • IIM brand. this is the single most important factor. the three letters I-I-M on your degree change your career trajectory
  • IIM calcutta mentorship means the curriculum, case studies, and teaching methodology follow top-tier standards
  • diverse student body. students from across india, not just bihar. this networking is valuable
  • improving placements year over year. average package has been climbing steadily
  • campus is new and modern. library, hostels, and academic blocks are well-designed
  • strong alumni connection to the broader IIM network

weaknesses:

  • bodh gaya location. it’s not patna. the town has limited recreational, dining, and social options
  • campus is still developing. some facilities are being built/improved
  • fees are the highest in bihar for mba. rs 12-15 lakh total is significant for most bihar families
  • being a newer IIM, it doesn’t have the alumni depth of the older IIMs
  • placements, while good, are not at par with IIM A/B/C or even XLRI and FMS levels yet

placements:

  • average package: rs 12-15 lakh per annum
  • median package: rs 10-12 lakh per annum
  • top packages: rs 20-25 lakh per annum
  • sectors: consulting, BFSI, IT, FMCG, e-commerce
  • top recruiters include deloitte, EY, ICICI bank, amazon, TCS, cognizant

verdict: if you can crack CAT with 90+ percentile and can manage the fees, IIM bodh gaya is the no-debate choice for mba in bihar. the IIM brand alone is worth the investment. the ROI, even at rs 15 lakh total fees, is positive within 2-3 years of graduating. the bodh gaya location is isolating but honestly, you’re there to study, not party.

2. chandragupt institute of management patna (CIMP)

government-aided / mithapur, patna / total fees: rs 5-7 lakh (2 years) / 8/10

CIMP is the hidden gem of management education in bihar. established in 2008 by the government of bihar, it was initially mentored by IIM ahmedabad (yes, really). the institute is named after chandragupt maurya and is located in mithapur, central patna.

what sets CIMP apart from other non-IIM colleges in bihar is the genuine effort to maintain academic standards. the curriculum is modeled on IIM patterns, case studies are used extensively, and the faculty, while small, includes some genuinely good professors.

a relative’s friend who did mba from CIMP in 2020 described it as “IIM-lite at a fraction of the cost.” that’s a fair description.

entrance accepted: CAT, MAT, XAT, CMAT

  • CAT cutoff: approximately 60-75 percentile for general category
  • MAT cutoff: approximately 600+ score
  • much more accessible than IIM bodh gaya

strengths:

  • best non-IIM management education in bihar. the curriculum and pedagogy are serious
  • IIM ahmedabad mentorship legacy has shaped the institutional culture
  • patna location means lower living costs and better connectivity than bodh gaya
  • fees are very reasonable. rs 5-7 lakh total for 2 years is excellent for the quality
  • growing placement numbers with companies recognizing the CIMP brand
  • summer internship program is well-structured with genuine corporate exposure

weaknesses:

  • small batch size limits peer networking compared to larger B-schools
  • infrastructure is functional but not impressive. the campus is compact
  • doesn’t have the brand recognition of IIMs outside bihar and eastern india
  • faculty strength could be higher. some courses rely on visiting professors
  • alumni network is still developing (only around since 2008)

placements:

  • average package: rs 6-8 lakh per annum
  • median package: rs 5-7 lakh per annum
  • top packages: rs 12-15 lakh per annum
  • sectors: BFSI dominates, followed by IT, consulting, and FMCG
  • notable recruiters: HDFC bank, ICICI, axis bank, TCS, wipro, deloitte, various regional companies

verdict: CIMP is the smartest choice for students who can’t crack IIM cutoffs but want quality management education in bihar. the fees-to-placement ratio is genuinely good. at rs 5-7 lakh total, if you’re getting a rs 6-8 lakh annual starting salary, the ROI is positive from year one. the brand is growing, and early batches are already in mid-management roles across companies.

tier 2: decent options with realistic expectations

3. patna women’s college (mba department)

government-aided / bailey road, patna / total fees: rs 60,000-1,20,000 (2 years) / 7.5/10

patna women’s college (PWC) keeps showing up in these education guides, and for good reason. the NAAC A++ graded institution offers an mba program that’s perhaps the best value for money in bihar’s management education landscape.

the mba department here has a focused placement cell, industry connections that the rest of patna university lacks, and a structured curriculum. for women in bihar who want an mba without the rs 5-15 lakh investment, PWC is the obvious choice.

strengths:

  • absurdly affordable. under rs 1.2 lakh total for a 2-year mba is nearly free
  • NAAC A++ institutional grade adds credibility
  • dedicated placement cell with genuine corporate connections
  • safe campus environment specifically for women
  • good for women targeting careers in banking, insurance, and government sectors

weaknesses:

  • women only. limits the peer group diversity
  • brand recognition is limited outside bihar
  • placement packages are lower than CIMP or IIM BG
  • infrastructure is decent but not corporate-grade
  • the mba program is a small part of a larger college, not a standalone B-school

placements:

  • average package: rs 3-5 lakh per annum
  • sectors: banking, education, insurance, government agencies
  • decent for the fee structure but not competitive at a national level

verdict: if you’re a woman in bihar who wants an mba without significant financial burden, PWC is the best option. the education is legitimate, the fees are negligible, and the degree opens doors in bihar’s corporate and government sectors. don’t expect delhi or mumbai recruiter access, but for careers in eastern india, it works.

4. department of management, patna university

government / ashok rajpath, patna / total fees: rs 60,000-1,20,000 (2 years) / 7/10

patna university’s own management department offers an mba program at predictably low PU fees. the department is part of the PU main campus on ashok rajpath.

the program benefits from PU’s overall institutional infrastructure (library, central facilities) but suffers from the same issues that affect most PU departments: dated infrastructure, large class sizes, and limited industry connections.

strengths:

  • patna university brand carries weight within bihar
  • dirt-cheap fees. under rs 1.2 lakh total for a 2-year mba
  • central patna location with good connectivity
  • decent faculty with academic research backgrounds
  • good for students planning to combine mba with competitive exam preparation

weaknesses:

  • no structured placement system comparable to CIMP or IIM
  • infrastructure is PU-standard, meaning basic at best
  • the mba program competes for resources with larger departments
  • industry exposure and internship support are limited
  • teaching style tends toward theoretical rather than case-study based

verdict: a valid option if you’re on an extreme budget and want an mba degree from a recognized university. the PU name works within bihar’s government and public sector hiring. for private sector careers, CIMP or IIM BG are worth the extra investment.

5. NIT patna (mba department)

government (NIT) / ashok rajpath, patna / total fees: rs 2-3 lakh (2 years) / 7/10

NIT patna’s mba program is often overlooked because people associate NITs purely with engineering. but the management department here offers a legitimate mba with the NIT institutional backing.

the advantage of NIT patna’s mba is the tech-management intersection. students get exposure to technical concepts alongside management education, which is increasingly valuable in a tech-driven economy.

strengths:

  • NIT brand carries national recognition, even for non-engineering programs
  • affordable at rs 2-3 lakh total
  • tech-management curriculum overlap is a genuine differentiator
  • NIT campus infrastructure (library, computer labs, internet) is better than most bihar colleges
  • access to NIT patna’s broader placement cell and corporate connections

weaknesses:

  • mba is not NIT patna’s primary focus. the program gets less institutional attention than engineering
  • small batch size limits peer networking
  • faculty for management subjects is limited compared to dedicated B-schools
  • brand recognition specifically for mba from NIT is lower than IIM or even CIMP
  • placement opportunities for mba students are fewer than for B.Tech students

placements:

  • average package: rs 5-8 lakh per annum
  • sectors: IT services, banking, consulting (primarily through NIT’s broader placement network)
  • better placement support than PU mba but below CIMP level

verdict: a solid mid-tier option, especially for students interested in the tech-management intersection. the NIT brand and infrastructure make it better than most private colleges at a fraction of the cost. worth considering if CIMP and IIM BG don’t work out.

6. amity business school, patna

private / rupaspur, patna / total fees: rs 6-8 lakh (2 years) / 6.5/10

amity’s patna campus offers mba through its business school. the national amity brand and modern infrastructure are the selling points. the campus at rupaspur has the standard amity features: AC classrooms, computer labs, library, and a structured semester system.

strengths:

  • modern infrastructure. the campus looks and feels like a professional B-school
  • national brand recognition (more in management than law or engineering)
  • structured curriculum with regular assessments and industry interaction sessions
  • accepts multiple entrance exam scores (CAT, MAT, GMAT, amity’s own test)
  • better campus life experience than government colleges

weaknesses:

  • fees (rs 6-8 lakh total) are higher than CIMP for lower placement outcomes
  • the amity patna brand is weaker than amity noida or other established campuses
  • placement numbers for the patna campus specifically are not impressive
  • ROI is questionable compared to CIMP at similar or lower fees
  • faculty quality and research output vary significantly

placements:

  • average package: rs 4-6 lakh per annum
  • sectors: banking, retail, IT services, education
  • placement support exists but outcomes lag behind CIMP despite higher fees

verdict: amity makes sense only if you value the private university experience (infrastructure, campus life, structured schedule) enough to pay more for lower placement outcomes than CIMP. if placement ROI is your priority, CIMP beats amity hands down.

7. lalit narayan mishra institute (LNMI), patna

private-aided / patna / total fees: rs 3-5 lakh (2 years) / 6.5/10

LNMI has been offering management education in patna for decades. it’s one of the older management institutes in bihar and has a reasonable alumni network in banking and government sectors.

strengths:

  • established institute with long history in patna
  • alumni in banking and government sectors
  • reasonable fees at rs 3-5 lakh total
  • accepts CAT and MAT scores
  • central patna location

weaknesses:

  • infrastructure needs modernization
  • placement numbers have stagnated compared to newer competitors like CIMP
  • brand doesn’t carry the weight it once did
  • faculty retention is a challenge
  • the institute hasn’t kept pace with changes in management education

verdict: LNMI is a legacy name that hasn’t evolved enough. at the current fee level, CIMP offers significantly better outcomes. consider LNMI only if other options don’t work out.

8. birla institute of technology (BIT), patna extension

private / patna / total fees: rs 4-6 lakh (2 years) / 6.5/10

BIT patna is an extension center of BIT mesra (ranchi). the mba program here benefits from the BIT brand, which carries reasonable recognition in eastern india.

strengths:

  • BIT brand has recognition in eastern india
  • curriculum aligned with BIT mesra standards
  • accepts CAT, MAT, and XAT scores
  • decent faculty from the BIT system
  • moderate fees

weaknesses:

  • extension center status means it gets less institutional attention than the main campus
  • infrastructure is not at par with BIT mesra
  • placements primarily serve the patna/eastern india market
  • the extension center tag can reduce the brand premium
  • limited hostel and campus facilities

verdict: if you’re familiar with the BIT brand and want to stay in patna, it’s a viable option. but the extension center tag limits its appeal. CIMP is still the better choice in the same price range.

9. new era business school, patna

private / patna / total fees: rs 3-5 lakh (2 years) / 6/10

new era has been operating in patna for a while and focuses on practical management education. the institute accepts MAT scores and has its own entrance exam.

strengths:

  • affordable fees
  • focused on practical business skills
  • patna location with reasonable connectivity
  • accepts MAT and own entrance (lower barrier to entry)

weaknesses:

  • limited brand recognition even within bihar
  • placement support is basic
  • infrastructure is modest
  • no strong differentiator compared to government options at lower fees
  • alumni network is limited

verdict: a fallback option. if you’re set on mba but can’t get into CIMP, IIM BG, NIT patna, or PU, new era delivers a functional degree. but the career outcomes are modest.

10. BR ambedkar bihar university (mba department), muzaffarpur

government / muzaffarpur / total fees: rs 50,000-1,00,000 (2 years) / 5.5/10

BRABU muzaffarpur’s mba department serves north bihar students who want management education without moving to patna. the fees are rock-bottom and the degree is recognized.

strengths:

  • cheapest mba option in bihar
  • government university degree
  • serves students in north bihar region
  • low cost of living in muzaffarpur

weaknesses:

  • minimal placement support
  • infrastructure is basic
  • limited industry exposure
  • the degree has minimal recognition in corporate hiring
  • faculty strength varies year to year

verdict: only consider if moving to patna is not feasible and you need a government university mba degree for career advancement (government jobs value any mba for eligibility). for private sector careers, this degree won’t open doors.

mba entrance exams: what bihar students should know

CAT (common admission test)

  • conducted by: IIMs (rotating)
  • required for: IIM bodh gaya, CIMP, NIT patna, and most good B-schools
  • exam pattern: quantitative aptitude, verbal ability + reading comprehension, data interpretation + logical reasoning
  • total marks: scaled scoring out of approximately 300
  • difficulty: high. only ~5% score above 90 percentile
  • exam month: november/december
  • preparation time: 6-12 months recommended

MAT (management aptitude test)

  • conducted by: AIMA
  • required for: many private colleges, CIMP (also accepts), LNMI, amity, new era
  • exam pattern: language comprehension, mathematical skills, data analysis, intelligence and critical reasoning, indian and global environment
  • difficulty: moderate. easier than CAT
  • conducted: 4 times a year (february, may, september, december)
  • good for: students who find CAT too difficult or want more attempts

XAT (xavier aptitude test)

  • conducted by: XLRI jamshedpur
  • accepted by: CIMP, BIT patna, and some national B-schools
  • similar to CAT in difficulty but with an additional essay component

my recommendation

prepare for CAT. it’s the gold standard and accepted everywhere. if your CAT score isn’t good enough for IIM BG or CIMP, use your MAT/XAT score for backup options. don’t prepare exclusively for MAT unless you’re targeting only MAT-accepting colleges.

is mba worth it in bihar?

honest answer: it depends entirely on where you do it from and what your career goals are.

yes, mba is worth it if:

  • you get into IIM bodh gaya (the brand alone changes your trajectory)
  • you get into CIMP at rs 5-7 lakh and land a rs 6-8 lakh/year job (positive ROI from year one)
  • you’re a working professional seeking career advancement where an mba degree checks a box
  • you want to transition from a technical role to management

no, mba may not be worth it if:

  • you’re doing it from a low-tier college just because “everyone does mba”
  • you’re spending rs 4-8 lakh at a private college with rs 3-4 lakh placement outcomes
  • you have a clear competitive exam goal (BPSC, banking) where an mba degree doesn’t add much
  • you’re avoiding the job market by spending 2 more years in college

the cost of living in patna is low enough that an mba at CIMP or PU is financially viable for most families. but the opportunity cost of 2 years matters. if you’re 22 and can crack a government exam, the salary + job security might beat an mba from a mid-tier college.

final thoughts

bihar’s mba landscape is a tale of two realities. at the top, IIM bodh gaya and CIMP offer genuinely good management education with reasonable career outcomes. below that, it’s a bunch of colleges offering mba degrees of varying quality, most of which don’t justify the time or money invested.

my advice: aim for IIM bodh gaya through CAT. give it your best shot. if that doesn’t work, CIMP is an excellent plan B at much lower fees. beyond these two, think carefully about whether mba is the right path or whether competitive exam preparation, skill-based courses, or direct job hunting might serve you better.

the worst outcome is spending rs 5-8 lakh and 2 years at a college that places you at rs 3 lakh per annum. that math doesn’t work. be strategic, not impulsive.
