tl;dr: 15 best hotels in patna across all budgets. from rs 800 budget rooms to rs 8000+ luxury stays. location, amenities, pricing, and honest opinions from someone who's stayed and visited.

tldr: my top picks across budgets - hotel maurya (best luxury, rs 5500+, fraser road), lemon tree premier (best modern hotel, rs 4500+, exhibition road), hotel chanakya (best mid-range, rs 2000-3500, boring road), and hotel president (best budget, rs 800-1200, near station). fraser road and boring road are the best areas. book through goibibo or makemytrip for the best rates. avoid unverified properties near the station area.

finding a good hotel in patna used to be a genuine problem. ten years ago, the options were hotel maurya for luxury and a handful of questionable properties for everything else. the city had terrible hotel infrastructure for a state capital.

that’s changed considerably. patna now has branded chains, modern mid-range properties, and even some boutique-style options. the overall quality has improved, though it still lags behind cities like jaipur, lucknow, or bhubaneswar. you need to know where to book and what to expect.

i’ve stayed at several of these hotels during my visits to patna, and my family who lives in the city has hosted relatives at many others. this guide is based on a combination of personal experience, family recommendations, and research on current ratings and reviews. every price listed is approximate and based on standard double room rates booked online.

the awards (my picks)

  • best overall: hotel maurya, fraser road - the only genuine 5-star in patna
  • best modern hotel: lemon tree premier, exhibition road - branded, consistent, reliable
  • best mid-range: hotel chanakya, boring road - solid value, great location
  • best budget: hotel president, station area - clean rooms, can’t beat the location
  • best for business: lemon tree premier - business centre, meeting rooms, airport proximity
  • best for families: hotel maurya or chanakya - space, service, and reliability
  • best location: anything on fraser road - central to everything
  • best new hotel: hotel magadhi, patliputra - rooftop restaurant, modern amenities

luxury hotels (rs 4500+)

these are the hotels you book when you want reliability, service, and amenities. patna’s luxury segment is small, basically two real options, but they’re genuine.

1. hotel maurya

fraser road / rs 5500-8500 per night / 9/10

hotel maurya is patna’s only true 5-star hotel and has been the city’s hospitality landmark for decades. managed by the bihar state tourism development corporation (bstdc), it sits on fraser road in the heart of the city. the location is unbeatable, 10 minutes from patna junction, close to the main markets, and walking distance from gandhi maidan.

the rooms are large by indian hotel standards. the standard rooms have clean interiors, comfortable beds, good air conditioning, and functioning wifi. the suites are genuinely impressive with separate living areas and city views. the bathroom fittings are well-maintained, hot water is consistent, and housekeeping is reliable.

spice court, the in-house restaurant, is the best fine dining restaurant in patna. the multi-cuisine menu is excellent, and the breakfast buffet is the most comprehensive in the city. there’s also a coffee shop and a bar (though remember bihar has alcohol prohibition, so the bar serves non-alcoholic options).

other amenities include a swimming pool, fitness centre, conference halls, and a travel desk. the pool is one of the few functional hotel pools in patna.

who should stay here: business travelers who need reliable amenities, families celebrating occasions, anyone visiting patna for the first time and wanting a hassle-free base.

the catch: the hotel shows its age in some areas. the corridors and common areas have been renovated but some rooms feel dated compared to newer branded hotels. the prices have increased faster than the renovation pace. and being a government-managed property, the bureaucratic DNA occasionally shows in service responsiveness.

booking tip: book through makemytrip or goibibo for rates that are 15-25% lower than the hotel’s own website. weekday rates are significantly cheaper than weekends.

2. lemon tree premier

exhibition road / rs 4500-7000 per night / 8.5/10

lemon tree premier is the modern alternative to hotel maurya. it’s a chain property, which means branded consistency. you know what you’re getting: clean rooms, functional amenities, professional service, and no surprises. the hotel opened relatively recently and everything still feels fresh.

the rooms are contemporary in design, well-lit, and equipped with modern amenities including smart tvs, high-speed wifi, electronic safe, and rain shower. the beds are excellent (lemon tree’s mattresses are consistently good across their chain). the soundproofing is better than most patna hotels.

the in-house restaurant is decent for daily meals. the breakfast buffet covers all the basics. the location on exhibition road puts you close to the market area, gandhi maidan, and patna junction.

who should stay here: business travelers, solo travelers who want a reliable chain experience, anyone who values modern amenities over character and history.

the catch: the location on exhibition road is central but the immediate surroundings are chaotic. the street outside is noisy and congested. the hotel compensates with good soundproofing, but stepping outside for a walk isn’t pleasant. also, it lacks the character and heritage feel of hotel maurya.

booking tip: lemon tree’s own app sometimes has better rates than ota platforms. their loyalty programme gives decent discounts for repeat stays.

upper mid-range hotels (rs 2000-4500)

this is the sweet spot for most visitors. you get ac rooms, clean bathrooms, wifi, and a restaurant without paying luxury prices. these hotels have improved dramatically in the last 5 years.

3. hotel chanakya

boring road / rs 2000-3500 per night / 8/10

hotel chanakya has been on boring road for a long time and it has aged well. the location is excellent, right on patna’s most popular food and shopping street. the rooms have been recently renovated and offer clean, comfortable stays with ac, wifi, flat-screen tv, and modern bathrooms. the staff is helpful and the check-in process is smooth.

the in-house restaurant is good for daily meals. but the real advantage is location - step outside and you have dozens of restaurants, cafes, and street food options. the boring road food guide covers all of these.

who should stay here: couples, families, anyone who wants to be in the middle of patna’s most active area without paying luxury prices.

the catch: boring road gets extremely noisy and congested, especially in the evenings. ask for a room on a higher floor or at the back of the hotel if you’re a light sleeper. parking can be a challenge during peak hours.

4. ginger patna

bailey road / rs 2500-4000 per night / 7.5/10

ginger is a tata-owned budget-to-midrange chain, and the patna property on bailey road is solid. the rooms are compact but intelligently designed, clean, and modern. the chain focuses on essentials: comfortable bed, good ac, clean bathroom, fast wifi, and no unnecessary frills.

the restaurant serves basic meals and the breakfast is adequate. the bailey road location puts you close to the zoo, several restaurants, and entertainment options. the hotel’s service is efficient without being personal, which is fine for business travelers.

who should stay here: business travelers on a budget, solo travelers who want reliability, anyone visiting patna zoo or attractions on bailey road.

the catch: the rooms are small. if you’re used to spacious hotel rooms, ginger’s compact design might feel cramped. the restaurant options are limited, but bailey road has plenty of external options.

5. hotel magadhi

patliputra colony / rs 2500-4000 per night / 7.5/10

hotel magadhi in patliputra colony is one of the newer properties in patna. the highlight is vrihi skydeck, the rooftop restaurant that has become one of the city’s most popular dining spots. the rooms are modern and well-maintained, the amenities are complete, and the patliputra location offers a quieter environment compared to the city centre.

who should stay here: visitors who prefer a newer, quieter property and don’t mind being 15-20 minutes from the city centre. the rooftop restaurant is a genuine draw.

the catch: patliputra colony is far from patna junction and most tourist sites. you’ll need an auto or cab for almost everything. the area, while developing, doesn’t have the walkability of fraser road or boring road.

6. hotel panache

boring road / rs 2000-3500 per night / 7.5/10

another boring road option, hotel panache is a clean, modern mid-range property. the rooms are well-maintained with good ac, wifi, and comfortable beds. the location gives you easy access to boring road’s restaurants and shops.

who should stay here: families and couples who want a boring road location without the premium of fancier properties.

the catch: nothing particularly distinctive about the property. it’s a solid, unremarkable hotel in a great location. sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

mid-range hotels (rs 1200-2500)

these hotels offer the basics done reasonably well. ac, wifi, clean rooms. don’t expect luxury, but expect competence.

7. hotel windsor

exhibition road / rs 1800-3000 per night / 7/10

hotel windsor has been on exhibition road for years and offers a reliable mid-range experience. the rooms are spacious (a rarity at this price point), the ac works well, and the location near gandhi maidan is central. the restaurant is basic but functional.

the catch: the hotel is showing its age. some rooms need renovation. ask for a recently updated room at booking.

8. hotel republic

exhibition road / rs 1500-2500 per night / 7/10

another exhibition road property, hotel republic is a clean mid-range option with decent rooms and helpful staff. the location is convenient and the pricing is fair. good for short stays of 1-2 nights.

the catch: the immediate area is noisy and congested. rooms facing the road can be particularly loud.

9. hotel rajhans

fraser road / rs 1500-2500 per night / 7/10

hotel rajhans on fraser road offers one of the best value-for-money stays in the city. the rooms are clean, the ac is strong, and the fraser road location is unbeatable. it’s walking distance from patna junction, close to restaurants and markets, and well-connected by auto-rickshaws.

the catch: basic amenities only. no pool, no gym, limited parking. the rooms are functional, not fancy.

10. hotel samrat international

fraser road / rs 1200-2000 per night / 6.5/10

a longtime fraser road property that offers basic accommodation at reasonable rates. the rooms are clean enough, the ac works, and the staff is helpful. it’s a no-frills option for travelers who just need a place to sleep and shower.

the catch: the rooms are small, the bathrooms are dated, and the walls are thin. not ideal for extended stays.

11. treebo trend hotels

various locations / rs 1200-2000 per night / 7/10

treebo is an aggregator brand that partners with independent hotels and brings them up to a standardized level. the patna properties i’ve checked are consistently clean, with functioning ac, wifi, and basic amenities. the app makes booking and check-in smooth.

the catch: quality can vary between properties. check recent reviews for the specific treebo property you’re booking. the brand standardization only goes so far.

budget hotels (under rs 1200)

this is where patna’s hotel scene gets tricky. at this price point, the difference between a good budget hotel and a terrible one is enormous. pick carefully.

12. hotel president

station area (near patna junction) / rs 800-1200 per night / 7/10

hotel president is the best budget hotel in patna. it’s near patna junction, the rooms are clean (by budget hotel standards), the ac works, and the staff is polite. the location is perfect for travelers catching early morning trains, and mahavir mandir is literally across the road.

the catch: it’s a budget hotel. the rooms are small, the furniture is basic, and the walls aren’t soundproof. the station area can be chaotic and noisy. but for rs 800-1200, you’re getting genuine value.

13. hotel amaltas international

fraser road / rs 1000-1500 per night / 7/10

amaltas international sits at the budget-to-mid-range boundary. clean rooms, working ac, decent wifi, and a fraser road location. it punches above its price range. my family has recommended this to relatives visiting patna who don’t want to spend on luxury hotels.

the catch: basic rooms, no premium amenities. the elevator is slow. some rooms haven’t been updated recently.

14. hotel garden court

south of patna junction / rs 1000-1800 per night / 6.5/10

a budget-to-mid-range property near the station area. rooms are functional with ac and basic amenities. convenient location for train travelers.

the catch: the surrounding area isn’t great. the hotel itself is fine but stepping outside feels like generic station-area chaos.

15. fabhotel properties

various locations / rs 900-1500 per night / 6.5/10

similar to treebo, fabhotel partners with independent hotels. the quality is standardized to a basic level: clean sheets, working ac, wifi. good enough for a night or two.

the catch: like all aggregator brands, individual property quality varies. check recent photos and reviews before booking.

area guide - where to stay in patna

fraser road (recommended for most visitors)

best for: first-time visitors, business travelers, anyone who wants to be central.

fraser road is the main commercial street in patna and the best area for hotels. you’re close to patna junction, gandhi maidan, markets, restaurants, and auto-rickshaw stands. almost everything you’d want to visit in central patna is within 3-4 km.

hotels here: hotel maurya, hotel amaltas, hotel samrat, hotel rajhans.

boring road

best for: couples, families, food lovers, shoppers.

boring road is patna’s lifestyle street with the city’s best restaurants, cafes, and shops. staying here puts you in the middle of the action without the chaos of the station area. it’s slightly further from patna junction (4-5 km) but more pleasant to walk around.

hotels here: hotel chanakya, hotel panache.

bailey road

best for: families visiting the zoo, budget-conscious travelers.

bailey road runs parallel to boring road and has the zoo, several restaurants, and developing commercial areas. the hotel options here are growing.

hotels here: ginger patna.

exhibition road / buddha marg

best for: museum visitors, history enthusiasts.

this area is close to patna museum, gandhi maidan, and the government district. it’s central but can be noisy and chaotic.

hotels here: lemon tree premier, hotel windsor, hotel republic.

patliputra colony

best for: visitors who prefer quiet, newer properties, longer stays.

patliputra is a residential area in the north of the city. it’s quieter and greener than central patna but far from most tourist attractions. good if you have your own transport.

hotels here: hotel magadhi.

station area

best for: train travelers, ultra-budget stays, short overnight stops.

the area around patna junction has the cheapest hotels but also the most variable quality. stick to known names.

hotels here: hotel president.

booking tips

when prices go up

patna hotel prices increase significantly during:

  • chhath puja (october/november) - the biggest festival in bihar, rooms sell out and prices double. the chhath puja complete guide has more on this.
  • new year - moderate increase
  • election season - hotels fill up with political workers and media
  • dussehra / navratri - moderate increase
  • weekends - 10-20% more than weekday rates

book at least 2 weeks in advance during chhath puja. seriously. hotels sell out. my family has had relatives show up during chhath and struggle to find rooms.

where to book

  • makemytrip and goibibo - best for comparing rates and finding deals
  • oyo, treebo, fabhotel apps - best for budget properties
  • hotel’s own website - sometimes cheaper for luxury properties (lemon tree, hotel maurya)
  • booking.com - good for reading international traveler reviews

what to check before booking

  1. recent reviews (last 3 months). older reviews may not reflect current conditions.
  2. room photos from travelers, not the hotel. hotel photos are always misleading.
  3. location on google maps. make sure it’s where you think it is, and check what’s around it.
  4. cancellation policy. many budget hotels have strict no-refund policies.
  5. whether breakfast is included. this can save rs 200-400 per day.

negotiation and walk-in rates

for mid-range and budget hotels, walk-in rates are often negotiable, especially during low season (april-june, monsoon). if you’re staying more than 2 nights, ask for a discount. most hotels will knock off 10-20% for longer stays.

what to expect from patna hotels

let me set realistic expectations because comparing patna hotels to mumbai or delhi hotels at the same price point will lead to disappointment.

the good:

  • most hotels have functioning ac (critical in patna’s heat)
  • wifi is generally available, though speeds vary
  • staff is usually polite and helpful
  • prices are significantly lower than metro cities for comparable quality

the reality:

  • hot water can be inconsistent in budget hotels, especially in winter mornings
  • soundproofing is poor in most properties below the luxury tier
  • breakfast options are limited at budget hotels
  • some budget properties still accept cash only
  • power cuts happen, check if the hotel has a generator (most do, but some budget ones don’t)

pro tip: always ask for a room demonstration before checking into a budget hotel. look at the ac, the bathroom, the hot water, and the wifi. this 5-minute check saves hours of frustration.

the bottom line

the best hotel in patna is hotel maurya if you want luxury and legacy. the best modern hotel is lemon tree premier if you want chain reliability. the best value-for-money is hotel chanakya on boring road. and the best budget option is hotel president near the station.

patna’s hotel scene is improving but it’s still not where it should be for a state capital with 2 million+ people. the key is managing expectations, booking smart, and picking the right area for your needs. stay on fraser road or boring road, and you’ll have a good experience regardless of budget.
