tldr: if money is no issue, go to paras HMRI or ruban memorial. if you want free/cheap treatment with good doctors, AIIMS patna is unbeatable but requires patience. IGIMS is the sweet spot between government and private. PMCH has the most beds (1748) but the most chaos. for cancer, mahavir cancer sansthan. for emergencies at night, ruban or paras, don’t risk government hospital emergency wards after dark unless it’s AIIMS. more details below.

patna is my hometown. my family lives here, and they’ve been to almost every hospital on this list at some point.

a relative’s cataract surgery at IGIMS. my cousin’s appendix operation at ruban. the time a family member had a cardiac scare and we rushed to paras at 2am on a visit. the endless OPD queues at PMCH where family waited 4 hours to see a dermatologist.

when patna is your hometown, hospitals aren’t just buildings. they’re places tied to family memories, some relieving, some terrifying, some frustrating beyond words.

and that’s why those generic “top 10 hospitals in patna” articles written by hospital marketing teams drive me crazy. they list every hospital as “state-of-the-art” and “world-class.” nobody tells you that the PMCH emergency ward at midnight is a different universe than what the website shows. nobody mentions that AIIMS OPD means waking up at 5am.

this is the guide i wish existed when my family in patna needed it. honest, practical, based on real experiences across multiple visits and what my relatives there have dealt with firsthand.

disclaimer: this is personal experience and general information, not medical advice. always consult a qualified doctor for medical decisions. in emergencies, go to the nearest hospital first, don’t waste time choosing.

government hospitals

1. AIIMS patna

area: phulwarisharif (aurangabad road, south patna) type: central government, teaching hospital beds: 1000+ OPD fee: rs 30 OPD timing: monday-friday 8:30am-4:30pm, saturday 8:30am-12:30pm

the best hospital in patna, period. not because of its building or waiting rooms (both are average for a government hospital), but because of the quality of doctors and the range of departments. 40+ departments. specialists you won’t find anywhere else in bihar.

if you have something genuinely serious, a rare condition, a complex surgery, something that a private hospital might mess up, AIIMS is where you go. the doctors here are among the best in the country. many trained at AIIMS delhi, PGI chandigarh, or top international institutions.

what works:

  • rs 30 registration. many investigations free
  • online OPD booking available (saves some pain)
  • best doctors in bihar, hands down
  • super specialty departments that don’t exist elsewhere in the state
  • free treatment for BPL card holders

the catch:

  • the OPD wait is brutal. i’m talking 2-4 hours on a normal day. during peak season, even worse
  • you need to reach by 6:30-7am if you want a decent token number
  • afternoon specialty clinics require referral from AIIMS general OPD or another government hospital
  • it’s in phulwarisharif, which is far from central patna. auto-rickshaw from boring road takes 40-50 minutes
  • the campus is huge and confusing for first-timers. signage exists but good luck navigating it under stress

pro tip: book your OPD online through the AIIMS patna website or app. it doesn’t eliminate the wait, but it saves you the chaos of physical registration. carry ALL previous reports, prescriptions, and scans. doctors here hate it when you show up empty-handed.

verdict: best doctors, worst wait times. worth it for anything serious. not worth it for a common cold.

2. IGIMS (indira gandhi institute of medical sciences)

area: sheikhpura type: state government, autonomous institute beds: 700+ OPD fee: rs 50 (valid for one week) OPD timing: monday-friday 8:30am-4:30pm, saturday 8:30am-12:30pm

IGIMS is what PMCH could be if it got its act together. it’s a government hospital that actually feels maintained. the campus is cleaner, the OPD system is more organized, and the wait times, while still significant, are better than AIIMS or PMCH.

my family in patna has had consistently decent experiences here. the rs 50 OPD fee is valid for a week, which is surprisingly thoughtful for a government hospital. you can do follow-ups within that week without paying again.

what works:

  • 30+ specialty departments
  • online appointment booking via app or website
  • cleaner campus and better infrastructure than PMCH
  • advanced trauma center
  • good cardiology and nephrology departments
  • reasonable wait times by patna government hospital standards

the catch:

  • not as many super-specialists as AIIMS
  • the parking situation is terrible
  • some departments have very few senior doctors, so you might get a junior resident
  • if you need something highly specialized, they’ll refer you to AIIMS anyway

pro tip: download the IGIMS app for appointment booking. saturday OPDs are less crowded. their ophthalmology department is underrated.

verdict: the goldilocks of patna government hospitals. not as prestigious as AIIMS, not as chaotic as PMCH. just good enough.

3. PMCH (patna medical college and hospital)

area: ashok rajpath (near golghar) type: state government, teaching hospital beds: 1748 (one of india’s largest) OPD fee: rs 10 OPD timing: monday-saturday 8:30am-2pm

PMCH is complicated. it’s the oldest medical institution in bihar (established 1925), has nearly 1800 beds, and sees more patients in a day than some hospitals see in a month. the sheer volume means you’ll find doctors who have seen everything. literally everything.

but the infrastructure has not kept up. corridors are crowded. emergency wards can be overwhelming, especially at night. the new super specialty building is under construction (5,462 beds planned) which may change things eventually.

what works:

  • rs 10 registration, probably the cheapest OPD in patna
  • enormous range of departments
  • experienced doctors who’ve seen every possible case
  • centrally located near golghar
  • super specialty departments including cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, urology
  • good for medical students and residents, so cases get thorough attention

the catch:

  • overcrowded is an understatement. the patient-to-doctor ratio is insane
  • infrastructure needs serious upgrades (ongoing, but slow)
  • the emergency ward experience is… not for the faint-hearted
  • cleanliness varies wildly by department
  • getting admitted is a challenge. beds fill up fast
  • attendants and support staff can be unhelpful

pro tip: if you’re going to PMCH, go early (before 8am) and go with someone who knows the layout. first-timers get lost. the OPD near gate no. 3 is where you start. avoid the emergency ward unless it’s a genuine emergency.

verdict: great doctors trapped inside struggling infrastructure. use it for OPD consultations and minor procedures. for anything major, consider AIIMS or a private hospital instead.

4. NMCH (nalanda medical college and hospital)

area: kankarbagh type: state government, teaching hospital beds: 1089 OPD fee: rs 10-20 OPD timing: monday-saturday 8:30am-2pm

NMCH is the other big government hospital in patna, often overshadowed by PMCH. it’s in kankarbagh, which is more accessible than PMCH’s location for a lot of patna residents.

what works:

  • affordable (rs 10-20 OPD)
  • decent OB/GYN department. a lot of women from patna and surrounding districts come here for deliveries
  • good orthopedics department
  • less crowded than PMCH on most days
  • CT scan, MRI, ultrasound, and lab facilities available on campus
  • dental OPD available

the catch:

  • infrastructure is similar to PMCH, aging and overcrowded
  • fewer super-specialty options compared to AIIMS or even PMCH
  • some departments are understaffed
  • not the place for complex surgeries

verdict: a functional government hospital for basic to moderate medical needs. if you live in kankarbagh or south patna, it’s closer and less chaotic than PMCH. but for anything serious, go to AIIMS.

private hospitals

5. paras HMRI hospital

area: sheikhpura (near IGIMS, NH-30) type: private, NABH accredited beds: 350+ OPD fee: rs 500+ (varies by doctor) established: 2013

the best private hospital in patna. first NABH-accredited hospital in bihar. 30+ departments, 95+ doctors, and actual corporate hospital infrastructure that you’d expect in delhi or mumbai.

when a family member had a cardiac episode during one of my visits, we rushed here at 2am. the emergency team was efficient, the cardiologist showed up within 30 minutes, and the entire process from admission to ECG to diagnosis took under an hour. that’s when you realize why private hospitals charge what they charge.

what works:

  • 30+ specialized departments including cardiology, neurology, oncology, gastroenterology
  • 24/7 emergency with actual round-the-clock specialist availability
  • robotic-assisted surgery capabilities
  • NABH accredited (the only hospital in bihar to get this first)
  • modern ICU and operation theatres
  • clean, well-maintained campus
  • insurance and cashless treatment available

the catch:

  • expensive. OPD consultation starts at rs 500, some senior doctors charge rs 800-1000
  • room charges range from rs 2,400/day (general ward) to rs 13,500/day (VIP suite)
  • billing can have surprises. always ask for an estimate before any procedure
  • some patients report unnecessary tests being ordered. push back if something doesn’t feel right
  • the cafeteria is overpriced (but that’s every private hospital)

pro tip: if you have health insurance, this is where you should go. they accept most TPAs and cashless is usually smooth. always get a written cost estimate before surgery. and don’t hesitate to ask for an itemized bill at discharge.

verdict: best private hospital in patna. expensive but you’re paying for reliability, infrastructure, and peace of mind. worth it for anything cardiac, neurological, or requiring surgery.

6. ruban memorial hospital

area: patliputra colony (boring patliputra road, near golambar) type: private, NABH accredited beds: 450 OPD fee: rs 500+ established: 2000

ruban has grown from a small hospital to a 450-bed behemoth in patliputra colony. their biggest claim to fame: first hospital in bihar to introduce robotic surgery. their liver transplant and hepatobiliary department is considered the best in the state.

what works:

  • excellent for liver, kidney, and urology cases
  • strong laparoscopic and robotic surgery program
  • good emergency department with quick response
  • NABH accredited
  • wide range of specialties: cardiology, nephrology, gastro, neuro, ortho, ENT
  • patliputra location is convenient for west patna residents

the catch:

  • google rating is 3.4/5 based on 2900+ reviews, which is mixed
  • multiple patients complain about billing. high costs, hidden charges, unnecessary tests
  • some reviews mention staff behavior issues
  • the billing department needs more transparency
  • like most private hospitals, costs can escalate quickly during inpatient stays

pro tip: ruban is excellent for emergencies. their ER response is fast and the location means less traffic hassle at night compared to getting to paras. but scrutinize every bill line item at discharge.

verdict: great for emergencies and specialized surgeries (liver, kidney, laparoscopic). just keep a close eye on the billing.

7. big apollo spectra hospital

area: agam kuan (sheetla mandir road) type: private, multi-specialty beds: 100 OPD fee: rs 500+

big apollo spectra (BASH) is the apollo brand’s presence in patna. smaller than paras or ruban at 100 beds, but the apollo name carries weight and the doctors here are solid. 60 specialist consultants across multiple departments.

what works:

  • apollo network means standardized protocols and good doctors
  • strong gastroenterology, orthopedics, and spine departments
  • 24 critical care beds
  • 3 ultra-modern modular operation theatres
  • clean, modern facility
  • good for planned surgeries

the catch:

  • only 100 beds. limited for complex, long-stay cases
  • agam kuan area isn’t the most accessible
  • apollo brand pricing. not cheap
  • limited parking
  • fewer departments than paras HMRI

verdict: if you trust the apollo brand and need gastro, ortho, or spine care, this is a solid choice. not as comprehensive as paras for overall multi-specialty care.

8. kurji holy family hospital

area: kurji, sadaquat ashram type: private (mission hospital) beds: 300 OPD fee: rs 200-300 established: 1939

kurji is the oldest private hospital in patna. a mission hospital run by the Medical Mission Sisters since 1939. it has a different vibe from the corporate hospitals. less flashy, more focus on affordable care.

what works:

  • most affordable private hospital in patna. OPD at rs 200-300 is significantly cheaper than paras or ruban
  • 12+ specialties including medicine, surgery, pediatrics, OB/GYN, ortho, ophthalmology, cardiology, urology, neurology
  • good OB/GYN department. generations of patna families have had babies here
  • accepts cashless insurance
  • the staff is generally kind and patient. mission hospital culture shows

the catch:

  • infrastructure is aging. it’s an 85+ year old institution and some buildings show it
  • limited super-specialty capabilities
  • fewer advanced diagnostic facilities compared to paras or ruban
  • google rating is 3.4/5 based on 900+ reviews
  • not ideal for complex cardiac or neurological cases

pro tip: if you need affordable private care for maternity, pediatrics, or general surgery, kurji is your best bet. the prices are what private hospitals should cost.

verdict: the budget-friendly private option. good for maternity, general medicine, and basic surgeries. won’t compete with paras for complex stuff, but won’t bankrupt you either.

specialty centers

9. mahavir cancer sansthan and research centre

area: phulwarisharif type: specialty (cancer), charitable trust beds: 300+ OPD fee: rs 50-100 established: 1998

if anyone in your family gets a cancer diagnosis in bihar, this is where you go first. mahavir cancer sansthan is a dedicated cancer hospital with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and palliative care all under one roof. it’s run as a charitable trust, which keeps costs significantly lower than getting cancer treatment at a private multi-specialty hospital.

what works:

  • dedicated cancer hospital with latest treatment technology
  • surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology all available
  • significantly cheaper than cancer treatment at private hospitals
  • free or discounted treatment for BPL card holders
  • good surgical outcomes for common cancers

the catch:

  • rated 3.6/5 on google with complaints about staff behavior and long counter waits
  • waiting times at the counter can be frustrating
  • some reviews mention rude support staff (though doctors are generally good)
  • being in phulwarisharif means it’s far from central patna
  • for rare or very complex cancers, doctors may still recommend going to tata memorial (mumbai) or AIIMS delhi

verdict: the go-to for cancer treatment in bihar. affordable, specialized, and genuinely saving lives. the staff experience could improve, but the medical care is solid.

10. mediversal multi super specialty hospital

area: kankarbagh (doctors colony, bankman colony) type: private, NABH and NABL accredited beds: 166 OPD fee: rs 400+

mediversal is a newer entrant that’s made a name quickly. first CAHO ACE accredited hospital in bihar. they’ve focused on cardiac sciences and neurology, and their doctors have strong credentials.

what works:

  • strong cardiology department (dr. rajiv krishna, 21 years experience, 98% recommendation rate on practo)
  • NABH and NABL dual accredited
  • modern diagnostic services: MRI, CT scan, advanced lab
  • clean, well-maintained facility
  • kankarbagh location is accessible from most parts of patna

the catch:

  • relatively smaller (166 beds) compared to paras or ruban
  • newer hospital, so still building its reputation
  • private hospital pricing applies
  • limited track record for very complex surgical cases

verdict: if you need cardiac or neurological care and want a well-accredited private hospital without going to paras, mediversal is a strong option. watch this hospital, it’s growing fast.

11. centre for sight

area: kankarbagh type: specialty (eye care), chain OPD fee: rs 300-500

a national chain with a branch in kankarbagh. covers the full range of eye care: cataract surgery, lasik, glaucoma treatment, retina care, squint correction, pediatric ophthalmology.

what works:

  • part of a reputed national chain with standardized protocols
  • full range of eye procedures
  • modern equipment for lasik and cataract
  • reasonable pricing for eye care

the catch:

  • chain hospital, so the personal touch can be missing
  • some branches are better than others. the patna branch is good but not their flagship
  • waiting times can be long for popular procedures

verdict: reliable for planned eye procedures like cataract surgery or lasik. if you want a second opinion, try sharp sight or drishtipunj as well.

12. sharp sight eye hospital

area: patliputra colony type: specialty (eye care) OPD fee: rs 300-500

sharp sight has over 20 years in eye care and their patna branch covers everything from basic eye checkups to complex retina and cornea procedures.

what works:

  • 20+ years of experience in eye care
  • cataract, lasik, retina, glaucoma, cornea, and pediatric ophthalmology
  • experienced ophthalmologists
  • good for second opinions on eye conditions

the catch:

  • single-specialty, so you can only come here for eye issues
  • pricing is on the higher side for eye care in patna
  • limited branches in patna

verdict: solid eye hospital. if IGIMS or AIIMS eye department has long waits (they will), and you can afford private, sharp sight or centre for sight are your best options.

the emergency guide: which hospital for what

this is the section i wish i had when my family in patna had that cardiac scare. in an emergency, you don’t have time to google.

emergency typego towhy
heart attack / chest painparas HMRI or AIIMSparas has 24/7 cardiologists on call. AIIMS if you’re closer
accident / traumaAIIMS or IGIMSboth have trauma centers. AIIMS is better equipped
stroke / brain emergencyparas HMRI or AIIMSneurology availability matters. paras has faster response at night
cancer diagnosismahavir cancer sansthanspecialized and affordable. start here
kidney failure / dialysisruban memorial or parasruban has excellent nephrology
liver emergencyruban memorialbest hepatobiliary department in bihar
eye emergencycentre for sight or sharp sightfaster than government hospital eye departments
pregnancy emergencykurji holy family or IGIMSkurji for affordable private, IGIMS for government
child emergencyAIIMS or paras HMRIboth have good pediatric emergency
general emergency (night)paras HMRI or rubanavoid government hospital ERs at night unless it’s AIIMS

7 tips from someone whose family has been through it

1. carry everything. every previous report, prescription, scan, blood test result. patna doctors will ask for them and get annoyed if you don’t have them. keep a folder. seriously.

2. go early for government OPDs. if you’re going to AIIMS, be there by 6:30am. IGIMS by 7:30am. PMCH by 7am. the token system means early birds get seen first.

3. book online when possible. AIIMS and IGIMS both have online OPD booking. use it. it doesn’t eliminate waits but it skips the registration queue.

4. get a written cost estimate at private hospitals. before any procedure at paras, ruban, or apollo, ask for a written estimate. compare it with the final bill. question any item you don’t understand.

5. ask for generic medicines. private hospitals often prescribe branded medicines from their in-house pharmacy (at higher prices). ask if a generic equivalent exists. most doctors will happily prescribe it.

6. use insurance. if you have health insurance, always go through the cashless process at private hospitals. paras, ruban, apollo, kurji, and mediversal all accept major insurance TPAs.

7. for second opinions, use AIIMS. even if you’re getting treated at a private hospital, it’s worth getting a second opinion at AIIMS for anything major. rs 30 OPD fee for peace of mind is the best deal in medicine.

the honest truth about healthcare in patna

patna’s healthcare has improved dramatically in the last decade. AIIMS arriving changed the game completely. paras HMRI brought corporate hospital standards. IGIMS proves government hospitals can work when managed properly.

but we still have gaps. there’s no dedicated children’s hospital. mental health facilities are almost nonexistent. rehabilitation centers are few. and the gap between what government hospitals charge and what private hospitals charge is a canyon, not a gap.

if you’re reading this because someone in your family needs a hospital in patna, i hope this helps you make a slightly more informed decision. i’ve sat in those waiting rooms during visits. my family there has navigated this system for years. i know the stress.

just remember: in a genuine emergency, go to the nearest hospital. you can always transfer later. seconds matter more than hospital ratings.

this guide is based on personal experiences and publicly available information. hospital services, fees, and doctor availability change frequently. always verify current details directly with the hospital. this is not medical advice.
