tl;dr: honest reviews of 25 best cafes in mumbai. specialty coffee, aesthetic cafes, brunch spots, and hidden gems across bandra, colaba, and fort.
tldr: out of 25 cafes, my top 5 are blue tokai (bandra, best all-round), subko (bandra, best specialty coffee), kala ghoda cafe (fort, best south mumbai), birdsong (bandra, best brunch cafe), and prithvi cafe (juhu, best budget). mumbai cafes are 30-50% more expensive than pune or bangalore, but the top-tier ones justify the price. this is a general cafe guide - if you’re specifically looking for cafes to work from, i have a separate guide.
note: this guide combines personal experience from multiple mumbai trips with extensive research - local food blogs, google reviews, recommendations from friends who live in mumbai, and cross-referencing multiple sources. i’ve personally visited about half these cafes. the rest are research-backed and clearly noted. i’ll update this as i visit more.
mumbai’s cafe scene is complicated. on one hand, the city has some of india’s best specialty coffee roasters, some of the most beautiful heritage-building cafes, and a brunch culture that rivals any indian city. on the other hand, mumbai rents are insane, which means cafe prices are insane, which means your rs 400 cappuccino comes with the unspoken expectation that you’ll leave in 45 minutes.
this isn’t bangalore, where you can park yourself at a cafe for 6 hours and nobody cares. this isn’t pune, where a rs 200 cafe visit buys you an afternoon. mumbai cafes are more like experiences. you go, you sit, you enjoy, you pay, you leave. the good ones make that experience worth it.
this guide covers general cafes - aesthetic spots, specialty coffee, brunch cafes, hidden gems, and the classics. if you’re specifically looking for cafes to work from with wifi and power sockets, i’ve written a dedicated guide for that because it’s a different list.

specialty coffee cafes
if you care about the beans, the roast, and whether your pour-over is done at the right temperature, this section is for you.
subko - bandra (mary lodge)
subko is the most exciting coffee brand in mumbai right now. they roast their own beans, they source single-origin from across india, and they do it inside a beautiful heritage space in mary lodge, bandra. the fit-out is gorgeous: exposed brick, vintage furniture, natural light.
the coffee is the star. their espresso-based drinks are technically excellent. the single-origin filter coffee rotates and they’ll tell you exactly where it’s from. the pastry case is small but curated, with the croissants being the standout.
why it’s special: subko treats coffee the way wine bars treat wine. they’re nerdy about it without being pretentious. the baristas actually know the beans and can guide you. this is not starbucks.
what to order: single-origin pour-over, almond croissant, flat white.
cost: rs 300-400 per person. vibe: heritage, bright, minimal. area: bandra, pali hill area.
blue tokai - bandra (pali hill)
blue tokai is india’s most reliable specialty coffee chain, and the bandra pali hill location is the flagship experience. they roast their own beans, they source from indian estates (mostly south indian - chikmagalur, nilgiris), and the consistency across locations is impressive.
the bandra outlet has good natural light, decent seating, and wifi that works. it’s one of the few mumbai cafes where you can sit for 2-3 hours without getting side-eyed. the cold brew is excellent. the food menu is basic but fine (sandwiches, cookies).
i’ve been to blue tokai locations in multiple cities and the bandra one is among the best. it’s the cafe i go to first when i’m in mumbai.
what to order: cold brew, cappuccino, the seasonal single-origin if available.
cost: rs 250-350 per person. vibe: clean, bright, work-friendly. area: bandra, pali hill.
dope coffee - bandra (carter road)
dope coffee is bandra’s newer specialty coffee entry. smaller, less known than subko or blue tokai, but the coffee is serious. they do a good espresso tonic (the drink that separates coffee nerds from everyone else) and their iced options are well-balanced.
carter road location means you’re near the sea link view and the evening walking crowd. good spot for a post-walk coffee.
what to order: espresso tonic, iced latte, cortado.
cost: rs 250-350 per person. vibe: small, casual, coffee-focused. area: bandra, carter road.
third wave coffee - multiple locations
third wave is everywhere in mumbai now: bandra, andheri, lower parel, fort. the coffee is consistent and good (not exceptional, but reliably above average). the real value of third wave is that you know exactly what you’re getting. no surprises. every location has wifi, sockets, and a don’t-rush-me policy.
for the price (rs 200-300 for a drink), third wave is the best value for consistent quality. if subko and blue tokai are the restaurants, third wave is the reliable canteen.
what to order: cappuccino, cold brew, hazelnut latte.
cost: rs 200-300 per person. vibe: chain cafe, consistent. area: everywhere.
bandra cafes
bandra is mumbai’s cafe capital. the density of good cafes between pali hill, carter road, and the surrounding lanes is the highest in the city. if you’re cafe-hopping in mumbai, start here.
birdsong cafe
birdsong does organic food in a beautiful space. the menu is health-conscious without being preachy: grain bowls, smoothie bowls, good coffee, and pastries that happen to be made with better ingredients. the space has natural light, greenery, and the kind of calm that feels impossible in mumbai.
birdsong is where bandra goes for weekend brunch. the wait on saturday morning can be 20-30 minutes. worth it. the avocado toast is the cliche that actually tastes good. the coffee is sourced well. the vibe is “i woke up at 8am on a saturday and i’m okay with that.”
what to order: granola bowl, avocado toast, flat white.
cost: rs 500-700 per person. vibe: organic, bright, weekend-morning energy.
the bagel shop - carter road
the bagel shop has been a bandra institution for years. it’s not trying to be trendy. the bagels are good, the coffee is fine, the sandwiches are solid, and the real selling point is that you can sit here for 3 hours and nobody cares. carter road location means you can stare at the sea between bites.
this is the cafe for long conversations, lazy afternoons, and the kind of sitting-around that mumbai usually doesn’t allow.
what to order: cream cheese bagel, cold coffee, any sandwich.
cost: rs 350-500 per person. vibe: casual, no-rush, carter road views.
veranda
veranda is housed in a colonial-era bungalow and the space is stunning. high ceilings, vintage furniture, wrap-around verandah (hence the name), and the kind of natural light that makes everything look good. the food is pan-asian-meets-continental, and the portions are generous.
this is where bandra does group brunches. the table sizes accommodate larger parties, the menu has enough variety for everyone, and the ambiance does the heavy lifting for your instagram story.
what to order: dim sum platter, eggs benedict, iced tea.
cost: rs 500-600 per person. vibe: colonial bungalow, groups, aesthetic.
suzette
suzette does french crepes in bandra and does them well. sweet crepes, savory galettes (buckwheat crepes), good coffee, and a small space that feels more paris than mumbai. the nutella-banana crepe is the obvious crowd-pleaser. the galette complète (ham, cheese, egg) is the better order.
what to order: galette complète, nutella-banana crepe, cafe au lait.
cost: rs 400-500 per person. vibe: french, cozy, small.
the nutcracker
the nutcracker does continental food and coffee in a space that’s designed for instagram but also serves genuinely good food. the interiors are colorful and playful. the menu covers breakfast, brunch, and lunch. the portions are decent for the price.
what to order: eggs florentine, pancake stack, cold brew.
cost: rs 500-700 per person. vibe: colorful, brunch-focused, instagrammable.
filter coffee co
for south indian filter coffee in bandra, filter coffee co is the answer. they do traditional filter kaapi along with south indian snacks (medu vada, dosa). it’s a niche offering in a city dominated by espresso-based drinks. if you miss your amma’s filter coffee, this is where you go.
what to order: traditional filter coffee, medu vada.
cost: rs 200-300 per person. vibe: south indian, casual, nostalgic.
south mumbai cafes (colaba, fort, kala ghoda)
south mumbai’s cafe scene has a different character than bandra’s. older buildings, more heritage, more history. the cafes here sit inside art deco structures and colonial-era buildings. you’re drinking coffee surrounded by 100 years of architecture.
kala ghoda cafe
kala ghoda cafe is my favorite cafe in south mumbai. small, charming, and tucked into the kala ghoda art district. the coffee is good, the sandwiches are reliable, and the location means you’re surrounded by galleries, bookshops, and the saturday art walk.
the space is tiny. 15-20 seats, maybe. which means weekend waits are real. go on a weekday morning for the best experience. the stairs leading up to it are narrow and easy to miss, which adds to the charm.
what to order: cold brew, grilled sandwich, carrot cake.
cost: rs 350-450 per person. vibe: artsy, small, charming.
the pantry - kala ghoda
the pantry does cafe food in a clean, european-influenced space. it’s more work-friendly than kala ghoda cafe (bigger, more seating, better wifi). the menu covers breakfast, lunch, and coffee. the sourdough is house-made. the eggs are done well.
this is where south mumbai professionals come to work-from-cafe. the weekday morning crowd is laptops and flat whites. the weekend crowd is brunch and books.
what to order: sourdough toast with eggs, flat white, the daily soup.
cost: rs 400-500 per person. vibe: clean, european, work-friendly.
britannia & co - fort
britannia & co is technically a restaurant, but the bun maska and chai experience makes it an essential cafe visit. this irani cafe has been running since 1923. the berry pulao (rice with barberries imported from iran) is the signature dish, but most people start with bun maska and the special chai.
the owner, boman kohinoor (who passed away in 2023), was as much an attraction as the food. the cafe continues under family management and the food hasn’t changed. the marble tables, the bentwood chairs, the photos on the walls. it’s a museum that serves food.
what to order: bun maska + chai, berry pulao, caramel custard.
cost: rs 150-250 per person (cafe items), rs 350-500 (full meal). vibe: heritage, irani cafe, living history.
kyani & co - marine lines
kyani is the less famous irani cafe that locals prefer over the tourist-heavy ones. it’s been here since the 1960s. the interiors are time-frozen: ceiling fans, glass display cases, old-school cash counter. the bun maska is excellent and costs less than a fancy coffee elsewhere.
what to order: bun maska, keema pav, chai.
cost: rs 100-200 per person. vibe: old-school, authentic, no-frills.
colaba social
colaba social occupies a heritage building and turns it into a cafe-bar-workspace hybrid. the interiors are industrial-meets-vintage. the ground floor is the cafe/bar, the upper floors have coworking spaces. the coffee is okay. the food is passable. the real draw is the space itself and the crowd.
this is more of a “go for the vibe, stay for the drinks” place. the evening transition from cafe to bar is seamless. good for groups who can’t decide between coffee and cocktails.
what to order: whatever cocktail is on special, the loaded fries, cold coffee.
cost: rs 500-700 per person. vibe: industrial, social, bar-cafe hybrid.
starbucks reserve - fort
i normally wouldn’t include starbucks in a cafe guide, but the fort reserve store is an exception. it’s inside a heritage building with high ceilings and gorgeous interiors. the reserve menu has single-origin options you won’t find at regular starbucks. it’s the starbucks experience minus the generic feeling.
worth one visit for the building alone.
what to order: reserve pour-over, cold brew.
cost: rs 350-500 per person. vibe: heritage building, premium starbucks.
cafe mondegar - colaba
mondegar is the tourist cafe of colaba. the walls are painted by the late mario miranda, the beer is cold, and the jukebox plays classics. the food is average. the coffee is average. but the vibe has been the same since the 1930s and that consistency is the point.
go once. sit by the window. look at the colaba causeway. order a beer and a sandwich. that’s the mondegar experience.
what to order: beer, club sandwich, just the vibe.
cost: rs 400-500 per person. vibe: retro, tourist, heritage.
lower parel and andheri
the bombay canteen - lower parel
the bombay canteen is more restaurant than cafe, but the weekend brunch service and the coffee program earn it a spot here. the space is beautiful: modern indian design, lots of natural materials, and an open kitchen. the menu reimagines indian food with modern technique.
the cocktails are excellent (better than the coffee, honestly). the weekend brunch is one of mumbai’s best. the prices are high but the experience justifies it for a special occasion.
what to order: pavlova, duck keema pav, the seasonal cocktail, filter coffee.
cost: rs 800-1200 per person. vibe: modern indian, designed, special occasion.
cafe zoe - lower parel
cafe zoe is the lower parel bar-cafe that the advertising crowd has been going to for years. it’s in a converted warehouse. the coffee is decent during the day, and it transitions to a bar in the evening. it’s neither the best cafe nor the best bar, but it’s a reliable hybrid.
what to order: cold brew (daytime), craft beer (evening).
cost: rs 500-600 per person. vibe: warehouse, creative crowd, day-to-night.
fable cafe - juhu
fable is juhu’s quiet cafe option. away from the beach chaos, it does decent coffee and food in a space that’s calm enough to read or work. not the most exciting cafe in mumbai, but sometimes you want calm, not excitement.
what to order: cappuccino, avocado toast.
cost: rs 300-400 per person. vibe: quiet, residential, low-key.
leaping windows - versova
leaping windows is mumbai’s board game cafe. the concept: come in, order coffee or food, and play from their library of 200+ board games. it’s niche but it works. great for rainy days, double dates, and anyone who thinks phone screens have ruined human interaction (they have).
what to order: coffee, nachos, and a game of settlers of catan.
cost: rs 300-400 per person (plus game fee). vibe: nerdy, fun, group activity.
prithvi cafe - juhu
prithvi cafe is inside prithvi theatre and is technically a theatre canteen, but it’s one of mumbai’s most beloved cafes. the chai is rs 25. the irish coffee (non-alcoholic) is a legend. the open-air seating under trees, surrounded by theatre posters and creative energy, is an experience that no amount of interior design can replicate.
prithvi cafe is not fancy. the food is simple (sandwiches, cutting chai, irish coffee). the seating is basic. but the vibe is unmatchable. you’re sitting where bollywood actors, theatre legends, and aspiring writers have been sitting for decades. for rs 100, you get a coffee and membership to that world.
what to order: irish coffee (non-alcoholic, the signature), cutting chai, veg sandwich.
cost: rs 80-150 per person. vibe: theatre, creative, open-air, iconic.
mumbai cafes: practical tips
pricing reality: mumbai cafes are the most expensive in india. a cappuccino that costs rs 200 in pune costs rs 350 in bandra. a brunch for two that costs rs 800 in bangalore costs rs 1500 in lower parel. budget accordingly.
reservations: birdsong, the bombay canteen, and the table need weekend reservations. everything else is walk-in.
best time to go: weekday mornings (10-12) for the quietest experience. saturday mornings for the brunch energy. avoid sunday afternoons in bandra - every cafe will have a 30-minute wait.
work-friendly options: if you need wifi and power sockets, read my separate guide for working cafes in mumbai. not every cafe on this list is work-friendly.
getting around: bandra cafes are walkable from each other (pali hill, carter road, hill road are all close). south mumbai cafes (fort, kala ghoda, colaba) are also walkable. but bandra to colaba is a 45-minute drive, so plan your cafe crawl by area.
mumbai cafes vs. other cities
| comparison | mumbai | pune | bangalore |
|---|---|---|---|
| specialty coffee | excellent (subko, blue tokai) | good (third wave, growing scene) | best in india |
| aesthetic cafes | excellent (heritage buildings) | very good (koregaon park) | excellent |
| work-friendly | poor (rent pressure = rush) | excellent (pagdandi, others) | best in india |
| budget options | limited (prithvi, irani cafes) | excellent | moderate |
| brunch scene | excellent (best in india) | growing fast | excellent |
| avg coffee price | rs 300-400 | rs 150-250 | rs 200-300 |
mumbai wins on heritage (irani cafes, colonial buildings) and brunch (the bombay canteen, birdsong). pune wins on work-friendliness and value. bangalore wins on sheer volume and specialty coffee variety. each city has its cafe identity.
